Thread: Question on Soundless Dreams

How common is it to have never heard a single sound when dreaming?

(Lucid or not, and pardon me if this has been asked before, I searched for about 10 minutes and could not find the answer I was looking for.)

I believe that happens a lot to everyone, but I think it might sometimes be a matter of not remembering the sounds you had during the dream after you wake up (which would be difficult to distinguish from you just assuming that you had sounds, especially if you dreamed of someone 'speaking' to you or something like that, seeing their lips moving, whether or not you actually 'heard' it during the dream).

there were a couple posts about it scattered here and there, I couldn't find them either

sometimes it's almost like you're psychic in a dream..you know what's being said because the script came from your brain...but you don't sense sound

some suffer the same thing with other senses as well

To elaborate a little:

Generally, when I dream, I rarley have conversations, or exchange words with people or things. When I do, I seem to express my thoughts, and be able to read the thoughts of others "telepathically" as was mentioned.

As far as other sounds go, such as ambient sounds, and the like. There is usually none whatsoever. (Now I am speaking of lucid dreaming only, and dreams where I have complete control.)

Not remembering, or not experiencing, because I can have lucid dreams that last for what I estimate to be 45 minutes to an hour in real time where I hear "nothing" and when I awake, I remember hearing "nothing" as well.

I think I am going to try to exercise my ability to "hear" tonight, and see how it goes.

I don't experience smell or taste in my LDs unless I focus on it.

I call it 'passive feeling', and also think of it like telepathy. I'd be interested to know if you can give yourself lucid hearing....I'd like that too.

i dream the exact same way all the time,not hearing any words but knowing peoples thoughts and feelings, lately ive started to remember some sounds from dreams because im working on recall,but i usually forget sounds after awakening because usually the pictures and actions of my dreams are more intresting.And i do like that whole telepathic feeling.

I will let you know how the "hearing" goes, hopefully I will have another LD tonight, and remember to attempt hearing. I hope you've had some more luck with increasing your LD frequency. Since I am new to this board, I have never given myself homework until tonight.

I dont recall any soundless dreams. I usualy hear lots of people talking and music, and backgroudn noise. SOmetimes there is background music like in a movie

Well, some good news, some bad.

Good news first, I had 3 dreams that I successfully recalled into my journal at different times of night this morning.

Bad news, I did not have any LDs, and therefore was unable to test out amplifying sounds, or anything of the like. Tomorrow night it is!

Good question about those sounds.
I have dreams where I hear everything. I hear the people speaking and I can't read their minds, I hear background sounds but never bg music...like in a movie. just the real sounds...

I have also dreams where I don't hear anything but I know that the people skope I did also but I don't know what they said.

Maybe I should try also to concentrate more on the sound next time.

I've had lots of dreams where I can recall sound, since im rather into my music XD Its pretty much only music, sound etc that I actually "hear", where as others have said, the words seem to be just in my head nearly all the time.

I have yet to have had an LD since the time of my last post, so I think I will let this topic slide to the wayside for a while, perhaps I'm concentrating too much. :-)

Well, well, well. . .

As soon as I stop trying:

This morning had the opportunity to try out concentrating on hearing sounds around me. I was atop a small mountain, some would say, hillside. I listened, intently... The strange thing is, as soon as I tried listening, the entire dream "came alive" I could feel the wind, cooling my entire body, I could smell the summer air, the grass around me, and I the sun, it got brighter and more uniformly lit the area around me, I could see for miles, green hills, etc.

What, you might say, does this have to do with sounds?! Well, I began to hear birds chirping! BUT, to my dismay, I think when I concentrate in my dreams I make my ears come alive in real life, there were birds outside my window, and chirping their heads off, as they do every morning. But I thought it slightly ironic that I was dreaming of a landscape that would most certainly include birds chirping, and for an instant, inside my dream, I thought I heard them.

Suffice to say, I was slightly disappointed by this experience (sounds part), that is. Other than that, though, I had a wonderful LD. Back to the drawing board...

I am thinking about wearing earplugs when I sleep, because I have very sensitive hearing when I'm awake, but also very selective, I can choose to concentrate on hearing things. I figure, if I wore earplugs to sleep, I wouldn't have to choose, anything I'd be hearing would be from the dream realm, not the real world. (hopefully)

The only drawback/danger I see in wearing earplugs to sleep is that if something did happen in the real world, ie. fire alarm, etc. I might be unable to respond quickly, and could end up injured, or worse. hmm

i almost regularly experience this! im glad to know someone else also does.
