      problems with WBTB

I know from experience that the WBTB method will almost always produce LDs or at least sleep-paralysis for me. However, the problem is that I'm a really, REALLY deep sleeper. I will often wake late the next morning, wonder why I didn't get up in the middle of the night, and then discover that somehow I must have got up, turned off both of my alarm clocks and gone back to sleep without even realising it!

I was just wondering if there's any other really heavy sleepers who have a particular way of making themselves wake up in the middle of the night. Perhaps I need to let myself sleep a bit longer? I usually time the alarms so that I'll wake up after 5 or 6 hours, but as I said above, I almost never manage to stay awake.

      Hi Lucy,

Well, if you turned the alarms off then at least you know you DID wake up in the middle of the night. What you need to do is remember to stay up a little longer so that you're a bit more fully awake.

What I think is happening is that you're soooo tired that you wake up, turn the alarms off and fall back to sleep too soon. Some suggest reading or watching some TV. Where are your alarms located? Are they right next to your bed? If so, put them across the room - somewhere where you actually have to get OUT of bed to turn them off. This will help wake you up to the point where you'll be aware that you're trying to WBTB and need to stay up a little longer.

You also might want to try having a softdrink or something with caffeine in it about an hour or so before bed. Not too much, but just enough to not get you to sleep so deeply.

      Hope this helps

Turn the volume on the alarms up really loud.

Put one or both far enough away from your bed that you must get out of bed to turn them off.

Leaving a light on or the curtain open makes my sleep lighter.

It's definitely easier to get up when I go to bed early and get plenty of sleep.

Believe it or not, I actually do this. I seem to be capable of getting out of my bed, finding the alarm, turning it off and getting back into bed without ever fully waking up
