Last nite this happened, but in my "LD?", I kept shouting "lucidity now!!" over and over and i knew it wouldnt work. i was surprised that it went as long as it did but i basically woke up cuz i was frustrated. when i woke up, i instantly said in my mind "shit! i shoulda spun!!".
but i did get two good things out of it. first, for some reason, i dont need to RC, i just instantly know im LDing when i jack into my dream. and two, my trick is to wake up around 4-5 AM and concentrate in my mind "i'm going to go lucid, I'm going to lucid dream" then steadily fall asleep.

I believe the definition of being lucid in a dream (in a nutshell i guess) is basically you know that you are dreaming; You dont necessarily need to be able to control the dream. As far as how vivid or clear it is all depends on how much you've been doing LD's i guess, and as well as any techniques you do during the day or at night to get to that lucid state. Theres probably other things that factor into how vivid a dream is whether its lucid or not (maybe even diet?)
As far as experiences ive read, some people need to actually lean against a wall or something in their LD and check out their hands, and sort of gather their senses, before doing anything else in a dream, which helps keep it vivid, and helps them in any activity they do... such as flying. Spinning, rubbing your hands together, yelling out "clarity now", "lucidity now", "total recal" (to help you remember whne you wake up) can help as well. Stuff like that.
As far as not needing to RC...well tahts obviously very neat. Everyone has their own way of going about lucidity...glad its a bit easier for ya. And yes waking up after a good 4 or 5 hours of rest, (when your sleep stage is usually in REM cycle), can have great outcomes. I used the HILD (also known as FILD) technique after waking up in the middle of the night (er morning...) and gained lucidity ...if only for a few seconds
