Thread: How Can Dreams Make You Learn This?

I've recently read LaBerge's book about Lucid Dreaming, but one thing he claimed made me sceptical...

How can gravity-related problems such as learning how to do a specific trick in freestyle, be learnable in lucid dreams? Do you unconsiously calculate the values and estimate your flying orbit through the air using formulas like W=mv2/2 and W=mgh. No I dont think so...

So how come you actually learn how to perform a skill if you don't have any frames of references at all? Let say you have never done a backflip in your life... ?

How can you get better in real life by practicing a gravity-related trick in a lucid dream?

Or am I just holding the wrong end of the stick?

Yes, you do unconsciously do the math... just like you do when you are triangulating to catch a football on the run or any similar thing.

LaBerge's point, as I recall it, had a lot more emphasis on being able to go through the motions without the risk of harm, establishing and refining the "muscle memory."

Remember that your entire experience of reality - gravity included - is nothing more than a mental model your brain constructs and maintains from sensory input. With enough experience, your brain can recreate or even create any situation you can imagine quite reliably.

Surely you've experienced gravity in a dream - and had it be real enough that it didn't cause you to question your state of consciousness.

I play piano. I have learned to play new piano music in a L dream, by remembering what a piece of music sounded like and then playing from hearing! I was able to play the piece after I woke up!


In another dream I was able to create a music book with one of my favourite pieces in! I made sure that I had been looking at the book every night though so that when I was lucid I would have a bigger chance of remembering
