Ah ha! In reality it's actually getting further away little by little... but then your mind would probably make sense of it being hundreds of millions of years ago when the Moon was much closer to the earth. It's amazing what the mind will make sense of.

Mine made sense out a movie theater shootout with guns yet none of the bystanders really panicking, a guy shooting and missing me from point blank range, and me shooting him literally with my gun to his head and him being totally unaffected by it. My mind somehow made enough sense of this nonsense and I didn't become lucid

What a great thread though some of the reasons are priceless.
