Normally, when we talk about Lucid dreams, we're talking about lucidity during stage 5
REM. I know that Tibetan Dream yogis claim to be able to maintain lucidity through their
entire sleep cycle - which I guess answers part of my question ...

Does anyone know with reasonable scientific certainty - that we can be consciously aware
      in Stage 1 and/or stage 2 sleep?

I have found little on this subject. My personal experience is as follows. If I have a deep
meditation session using CD's w/ binaural beats in the delta or theta range - I know I get
into a very deep trance like state. I get tons of hypnagogic images and flashes. I'm also
      very aware.

The peculiar observation is that I sometimes start snoring!. This is certainly consisitent with
my early sleep stages (ask my wife). So basically, I just hear myself snoring away.

I had a e-mail conversation w/ one of Laberge's colleagues over at the lucidity institute once and
he stopped short of confirming this theory - maybe he didn't want to say something wrong?

The other interesting effect I sometimes get in this state is hard to describe. Essentially, I get light
specs which collect above and between my eyes. When they collect into a bright red ball they "fire"
toward me and disappear. This repeats in a time periodic fashion - about once every 6 seconds or so.
After 5-8 balls of light fired toward me, it usually disappears.

The only thing I ever found which seemed to describe this phenomenon is the notion of the pinneal and
pituitary glands sympothetically charging up and down (electrochemically) during certain mental states.

I see this during deep meditation on occasion. I also see this before falling asleep in the middle of the
      night from time to time.

Does anyone have scientifically reasonable thoughts on either of these topics?

wow, this is really in-depth and seems a bit over my head, but here's my 2 cents:

When somebody takes a short nap late in the day do you start at stage 1? I have been awake for around 6 hours and then took an hour long nap and performed a WILD. I think that one hour would not give sufficient time to make it into the deeper stages of sleep so you would have to become lucid within the first few stages. I have little knowlege on this subject so if everything I said in this is BS then please tell me haha : )

There's some guy on the forums who claims he can WILD at night into a dream but he won't elaborate. Or no one has asked him yet. I'll try to find the guy and get you back a link

I think he talking about this guy : Aneas

I have been in contact with him and he is far beyond most lucid dreamers of today. As some would say " His soul is very old". I'd rather let him tell you about it though. I'm still integrating some of what he's said to me. Very deep insight.

With binaural beats to help drive my brain to a lower frequency state, I get really significant HI's
      in about 20 mn.

The collecting ball of light and projections thing - I get less frequently - it's more elusive.
However, this particular effect is very euphoric. Again, it means something I'm sure. I have simply
never heard anyone describe this effect.

I feel like I might have to meet up with a Tibetan monk to get my question answered?
