Well, this has happened to me more than twice already: A Reality Check telling me I'm awake while I'm in a dream.

Now I wonder if that has ever happened to you guys?

If yes, tell me how it was, an what you do to avoid it.

-----------------------

Mine were:

1. Pinching nose and still being able to breathe FAILED - I could not breathe

2. Trying to make my finger go through my hand FAILED - I couldn't make it

3. Trying to breathe underwater FAILED - I couldn't breathe

4. Counting my fingers FAILED - I had 5 in both hands

out of these, only 1 and 2 made me try another kind of reality check, and therefore get me lucid

You do a reality check such as pinching your nose, if you can breath whilst your nose is pinched then your dreaming but if you can't breath your normally awake, there are various methods to help determine whether you are awake or not

Oh Kromoh, once you have reached the point where you can do an RC to check have you ever considered trying a different approach to do an RC, instead of the typical ones maybe wish something to appear, if that fails keep trying until something appears within the dream, it could be a tree, a house, your mum, anything lol, just mess around, see what alternatives you can use

I do reality checks when I'm awake but I've never done one in my dreams, whenever I go lucid it appears to be for no reason other than I notice that something doens't seem normal. My cell phone was the case in my first real good one, it gave me really strange messages.

The checks that I use are electrical appliances like my phone. My computer is always right next to my bed so I look at the clock. If it says 4 am and I can see the sun through the window then I know that I'm dreaming.

The random places are what have sparked the rest of my dreams. A house I haven't been to in years, my grandfathers house with no recollection of how I got there... Try those instead.

Oh god... This happened to me just yesterday. I was in a regular dream petting a tiny dinosaur baby. I thought "Hmm... I wonder if I'm dreaming." And then I looked at my watch twice, but for some reason I didn't remember what the first time on the watch was, so I just went "Yeah I'm not dreaming, this is real life."

I convinced myself I was still awake...

I don't do any reality checks myself. I'm always getting lucid naturally.

But I have done two successful reality checks two times before, that I can recall:
- I read a text on a bottle three times. Each time the text looked differently, thus I concluded it was a dream.
- I punched my hand into a wall lightly. I didn't feel any minor pain at all, thus I concluded it was a dream.

My reality checks have always told me I'm dreaming, I just don't always realise this, and explain it away.

The only time I've done a reality check in a dream was when I went lucid, although I don't think I would have needed the RC... I was pretty sure I'd already been to school that day >_<
but a few nights ago I looked at my gameboy's serial number (I have it memorized) in a dream, and it was wrong. I looked at it again. it was still wrong and fuzzy. my gameboy was a different color than in real life too. Oh, no big deal. just a little weird. *continues nonlucid dreaming*

I'be become lucid so far only using the nose RC (that's the one I use most often), but in one dream, after noticing that I can breathe through my nose I tried the jump-to-see-if-I-float RC and it didn't work, which made me have second thoughts about jumping out the window - which I know is bad anyway, cause you might lose lucidity or simply fall, but still, I want to try it.

I think even if you fail both reality tests, it may well occur to you that your are in a lucid dream once you start looking around and poking.

Eventually you will be lucid.

I still haven't got anywhere.

I have, when dreaming and known it thought to myself I would try these RCs anyway just to see if the do work, and the finger one failed. Couldn't remember the others when lucid, but wondered why it wouldn't work.

It was as if my vision was blured, and I was seeing double, but I couldn't get my finger through my hand even though I knew I was in a dream.

Here is something else that works for me. Find things that should be a right angles (edge of a table, sidewalk, something standing straight up) and look carefully at it. In my dreams angles and edges aren't well defined.

I've most definitely tried that.

One of the times, was where I just pinched my nose, and I couldn't breath through it. I tried again, and then I could. Then I tried once more, and I couldn't, so I thought I was awake. Weird.

Is this where you do RCs but you don't realize your dreaming is that what you mean by failed?

That would be a yes for me also.

I was working outside with my mom and my sister in the dream and I looked at my hands and I started screaming "I'm dreaming I'm dreaming!" My mom looked at me and said 'no your not" somehow after that I remembered all these false memories of waking up that same day going to school and then going outside. But I was actually dreaming and I was right. This shows you not to listen to your DC:p

I have failed a reality check once before, yes.

The main reality check I use is the nose plug technique. In my experience with it, it has only failed me once (that I remember, of course) and that was in a very low level dream.

I don't actually remember myself doing the reality check, but I remember thinking about it upon waking up (obviously if it had been successful, I would have become lucid a remembered much more from the dream).

I don't do reality checks anymore. I recently noticed that I automatically move onto the dream stabilization part.

A few RC I have successfully used in the past:

- looking at my clothes (that was usually my first one)
- reading
- talking to DC
- sticking my hand through a wall
- breathing underwater
- throwing an object in the air and slowing it's fall

I have also summoned the human version of a manga character.

id go for the more reliant reality checks
if you try hard enough, and belive you can breath throguh your fingers etc, you will succeed, but its much more simple doing the other RCs
