what has triggered lucidity for you?

today, while reading this thread about DC behaviour, I came to a strange idea

well, by reading the several posts in that thread, I kind of realized how the mind works in the dream.. how it associates the smallest bits of information, i na way that doesn't suit reality

of course it has it's neurological reasons not to suit reality, that doesn't come to the point... what I wanna say is that, mostly, we don't get lucid because we don't think about lucidity in the dream

I don't even know why I'm making such thread, but I wanted to know what exactly triggers lucidity, by making your less-conscious, unreal thoughts activate your logical thinking

actually, when we are dreaming, there are thousands of processes involving serotonin or whatever-other-chemical, that inhibit your logical thinking, making the dream experience as surreal as it is

which means, ability to realize you're in a dream, aswell as dream vividness, isn't influenced by that

It'd be interesting to hear what triggers lucidity to other people before making a conclusion, but I think that it happens because a part of the brain gets out of the illogical "dream state", and so can influence the rest of the mind to produce the outcome it wants of a dream

      ---

in my 4 lucids after joining DV, what has triggered them was:

      1) Several false awakenings made me ask myself why I couldn't get up. By realizing something was wrong, I got lucid.
      2) In a futuristic dream, after seeing a familiar building, I compared it to the one "in present time". I realized I wasn't in the future, and tha tit was only a dream.
      3) At some point i just realized I was in a dream. Lucidity was low and faded quickly, though.
      4) After facing a potential danger, I chose to fight it instead of running. Having to fight it triggered my conscious mind and made me lucid. (Actually I think this is wha thappens when you become lucid after having a nightmare)

      ----

so, just tell me, what has made you lucid in a dream so far?

Well for me there was lucid related things in my dream (so i guess i had to be thinking of it) but that still didn't make me lucid. For example I had a dream that I was in the library looking at lucid dream books and there was this weird book that had my name imprinted on it but that still didn't trigger my lucidity. Another time I was looking at a candy bar and on the label it had something about lucid dreams (with some religious stuff which ws weird) but that did not spark my lucidity.
For me, I don't know, maybe I'm just weird, but all the times I became lucid it was kinda random like just a sudden relization out of nowhere, without having to put teo and two together or do reality check in my dream (even though i do RC in real life). Like i had a dream that I was at school and angry at these people because they were igoring me so I storm off and while I'm walking I just randomly become lucid. Another time to I was at a place and I see someone from school and i become embarrased and don't want her to see me, and then I decide to say hi, and then I realize im dreaming. Another time I was just at the store in my dream and became lucid. Nothing caught my eye or anything, at least not that I remember. I wonder why this happens for me.

well, I'd say that just reading things related to lucidity wouldn't make you think about lucidity itself, like, consider the possibility that you are in a dream

there is another thing worth pointing out.. every decision made by humans is conscious. whenever we analyse the pros and cons and make a decision, it's our conscious mind working, so maybe it has something to do with it

for me, even before I started studying LDs I've always had a natural ability to realize I was dreaming. Telling myself to wake up, making monsters disappear things like that, just because most of my dreams are never really normal. Reciently they've just been about working, because I assume that my brain is training me on my new job while i'm asleep. But since I've started reading up on LDs and what not. SP has been my trigger. I've had that happen to me everysince i was little, and I never really knew what it was. Now that I found out, I don't have to fight it, and wake up feeling like I'm more tired that when I went to sleep. I'd say in the past two weeks I've had 3 episodes of SP, and in two of them i've had a LD.

this is interesting stuff, its weird for me because everytime i have become lucid i don't know why i became lucid, it just happens for no reason, its cool but i'd rather have control over the situation, its interesting though because if we could pinpoint what triggers it we could practice it in our waking lives and it should project easily into the dream world, however the thing is that as soon as a lucid dreamer reaches a certain level of awareness in a dream they may be baffled by their surroundings and then start to question it, however i do not know where this boost of awareness comes from, its all very strange

well, considerign some people become lucid for no reason while dreaming, I'ld say some part of their mind simply gets rid of the dream state, avoiding those surreal thoughts. when a part of the min is conscious, it can influence, the rest of the mind, as I said

so, I guess there would be some areas of the brain which are not affected by the dream reactions, and that's what I want to get to

just say what you were thinking before you got lucid

False awakenings and real awakenings have done wonders for lucidity. Whenever I wake up, I automatically do the nose RC. And, for the past three days, I've done the same thing during both false awakenings and dream transitions. <3

A lot of time's I will become lucid for no reason as well. Part of it
is because I focus hard on remembering to notice that I am dreaming.
Also, durring time's when I am having a lot of Lucid dreams, I will
get used to the feeling of being in a dream, and I will just know.

or else I will notice odd thing's/dream sign's. Or I will get air born
somehow, and since I do so much flying in Lucid's, I will realise it instantly.

Or, if I am in a situation where there is no way for me to escape
a very awful death. I will not be able to comprehend that I am
actualy in the situation. And lucidity will wash over me in a wave
of pure relief. unfortunatly this doesn't happen as often as it used to.

Lucidity can happen at random. I haven't had many lucid dreams (2 lol) but I do know that you can spend a whole dream talking or reading about lucidity and never get the point! I just had a dream like that. I was talking to my sister about lucidity, and never got the idea to do a reality check.

It can be triggered by the subconscious mind, which is why I think it happens at random. The first time I had a lucid dream, was just because I had been thinking about it a lot. I became suddenly interested in it, so I had one. The other time I had been doing the hand reality check, and I did it in a dream. For most of the people here, I'd say since we practice techniques for lucid dreaming, that probably has a bit to do with it, eh? but it's largely just what you think about and how aware you are during the day.

I got interested in this a few days ago. I havent really remembered a dream in months. Ive got other things on my mind.

Now i read this site about how to become lucid, and about trying to remember dreams. Last night i remembered THREE dreams. That is amazing.

It is to do with whats on your mind i think. For example when my dad was younger, he never woke up with an alarm, he used to write the time on his forehead, go to sleep and always wake up at that time. He told himself to wake up.

I can normally do the same. I often wake up and look at my watch seconds before the alarm goes off.

There are several ways that I usually become lucid.

The most common is simply spontaneous lucidity, for no apparent reason at all. These seem more common at times when I'm not really doing anything in the dream, but seem to come at any time.

The second most common is when I spontaneously do a reality check out of habit, then realize what it means.

The third most common thing that helps make me lucid is nightmares, which almost always lead me to become lucid. This used to be the most common for me, but the others have gradually become more and more frequent.

Occasionally something else makes me lucid, like trying induction methods like WILD in my dreams, but these are far less common.

Rainman&Cammy, you guy's are both right about it being what's on your mind. This is why my main method, is to try and keep my mind aware
of the fact, that I could be dreaming at any moment.

I try to hold that in my mind from the moment I wake up, to
the time I go to sleep. And constantly watch for anything abnormal.

I have used this method to become Lucid pretty much at will.

But it is good to do reality check's as well. there has been many time's
when I was on the verg of becoming Lucid, and decided that it
was not a dream. If I would have done a simple reality check,
      I would have been Lucid.

I am currently doing more reality check's, the combination of method's
      should have powerful result's.
