Question Your first knowing LD: how long did it take you?

This is the quintessential dry spell for every LDer. Explained: how long did it take you to experience your first lucid dream after the moment when you learned what lucid dreaming really was, and that it was something worth pursuing? It might have been spontaneous, or it might have been an induction. For these purposes then, childhood LDs or other lucids experienced before you understood what they really were don't count.

Hmm, well my first Lucid Dream I made happen before I really knew if it was possible. I always wanted to do it as a kid. After watching the movie Dreamscape, I decided that I was going to make it happen. That night I went to sleep, with such an intense will to realise I was dreaming, that I made it happen. It took a couple of hours, but my next one took a week or so. It wasn't until a while later, that I found the book Exploring the world of Lucid Dreaming, and found out that other people were doing it as well.

I learned what lucid dreaming was from taking Psychology, but didn't consider it a worthy endevour until I had experienced two spontaneous lucids in close proximity (only a weeks worth inbetween them). I quickly found this site while 'googling' the phrase, and learned that lucidity was more attainable than I had once thought. Fourteen days later, I had my first intentional lucid dream.

I found out about lucid dreaming by looking into how sleep works (from howstuffworks.com). They had a link on the page that said "HowLucid Dreaming Works." I was in summer school at the time and figured what the hell, I'll giveit a shot. About 2 months later I had my first lucid.

I saw an ad for a NovaDreamer back in 1998 when they were still being sold by the Lucidity Institute and I had a lucid dream the first time I wore it.

I heard about them originally from my father, and also from reading some of Carlos Castaneda’s books where he would describe how finding your hand in a dream helped stabilize it (which works btw). But I had no idea how to go about it until i started research some time later, so after I found the WBTB method and MILD it took less than a month.

I started trying about a year or two ago (whenever my join date says). I have had like 5 low-level awareness lucid dreams, but none where I have full consciousness. I think my problem is motivation. I never do RC's and I haven't written in my dream journal for quite a while. I mainly only try to LD during the Summer, so I'm hoping this Summer will be the Summer that I finally have a good LD. Maybe I'll start doing RC's.

I feel really stupid...I'm one of the two people who had to wait 3-12 months. I don't understand why I didn't get it as fast as everybody else, I focused really hard on it for a long time. Makes me feel kinda like an outsider.

Aww sweetie.. don't feel that way.

We all learn/achieve at different paces. Please realize also that you're only reading a SMALL portion of replies.. there are probably alot more members out there that took as long as you did (if not longer).

You are to be admired as you didn't give up and you truly earned your first lucid dream.

      I salute you!

Thanks Clarity. It's just frustrating when you're sitting hear reading about all of these people's sucess stories, while you can't even do it yourself. I'll keep on going though, I don't care how long it takes. I'm pretty interested in this and I know I can do it...eventually. Thanks for supporting me

Tell me about it, I was happy having regular lucids, then my flat mate told me what they were and I read up on it and since then thought this is cool - must try more and have a dry spell for 6 months, maybe more

All better now though, but like working from scratch again, as you know having some trouble with the vividness now!

Is that getting any better? Have you been able to try out any of the suggestions we talked about?

I had my first within a few days of learning about LDing and starting LaBerge's "Lucid Dreaming". My next, a week or so later. My third a few weeks past that then I went a couple of months with none (due to "not trying").

Awww, don't feel bad. Think of it this way: A lot of people who took longer aren't in here bragging about it. Keep that in mind. You are probably closer to the average and that's not bad at all! You have no reason to feel like an outsider. We're all friends here.

I was really lucky when I learned about Lucid Dreaming. I hit the "random article" button on wikipedia, and somehow got it. I probably wouldn't have believed they were real, if not for the fact that I'd had a (very, very brief) Lucid Dream when I was really young.

After I learned about it, though, it only took me a couple of days to have one.

@ Truffles: Yeah, I wouldn't feel too bad. I think most of the time people run into beginner's luck, and then go through a long dryspell anyway.

And it's better than not knowing about LD'ing at all, amirite?

Thats funny, I had my first first one like in elelmentary school, but I had one the night after learning about. I think for all the people that did have them after learning were just so excited about it and had it on their mind. And the next night they have a normal dream. And the night after "Oh no! Its not that easy!" and never have one again

Yeah Truffles, I'm nine days away from my 5-year anniversary of not having had one yet, so no worries. You are not at the bottom of the curve.

I've been having LD's since I was 4 years old just about and can still remember some of the interesting LD's from when I was really young. So I have been having LD's for about 13-14 years. But if you are counting after knowing what LD'ing actually was from this site I had a LD that night.
