I've had a couple of similar experiences. However, instead of watching the LD, I could feel both my sleeping body, which wasn't moving, and my dream body, which was walking on a concrete floor of my old middle school. If you had relaxed and focused on the dream, you could have possibly re-entered it lucid.
As for a dream journal, it is very helpful to write down a dream right after you wake up, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to go into every detail at that time. Write down a summary and fill in the details later. As for tips on improving recall, just keep recording your dreams. Be persistent and your memory for dreams WILL increase.
