While reading another thread on SP last week or two, I came across another poster who put it this way (sorry I don't remember who said it, I was unable to find the thread).
Basically, we get scared because our Fight or Flight reaction is useless. It's the body's natural defense mechanism, and during SP, we can neither fight our fear nor run from it, which leads to an increase in the fear.
