      Is this normal?

Each time I have had an LD, it wasn't really classified as any of the techniques. I guess it could be considered MILD, but I'm not entirely sure.

When I get into bed, I slow my breathing before I repeat "I know I'm dreaming" to myself for a few minutes. Then I'll start to think of a certain someone or something I'd like to dream about until I fall asleep. On the rare occasions I do get an LD, it's not until after I have woken up and rolled over to go back to sleep.

Is that how it's supposed to work?

Well there's no one way to LD... people just do whatever works best for them! What you describe makes sense because one of the most successful technique is WBTB. When you woke up for a brief period of time and fell back asleep, it was probably easier for you to stay conscious or to remember your intent to LD.

I rarely even think about it when I wake up. I just turn over and go back to sleep. Once or twice I have repeated my nightly routine and repeated my little phrase a few times.
