Ability to Better Yourself in the Real World?

I have wondered for a long time if its possible to better yourself with like a skill that you practice while you lucid dream, and then use it in real life. I have heard of an experiment where they tested athlets, and I wont go into full detail, but they had four groups, all of them trained and mentally trained on a certain percentage scale. Group 1 trained 100%, they did no mental training. Group 2, trained 75%, mentally trained 25%, group 3, trained 50%, mentally trained 50% and group 4 trained 25% and mentally trained 75%. The training was ofcourse conditioning and practicing the skills needed for the sport they were in. Mental training was where they were put into trances and visualized themselves training, practicing the skills, moves, etc. The team that trained more mentally did better than any of them.

I remember once I had a dream where I was practicing growling/screaming with the lady that taught in the DVD The Zen of Screaming. I mean I was face to face with her, and if I did something wrong, she corrected me right away. She also showed me alot of techniques such as head position, how to fill up my lungs, not use my throat, etc. And the next morning I was actually able to scream/growl a hell of a lot better than I was able to the day before, which I was basically not able to at all. I know I posted this description of this dream a while back in one of my questions, but as time went on, I actually had the same dream again and was able to remember it a hell of alot better this time. This is the dream I had a few weeks ago. Anyways what do you guys think?

Being able to induce a lucid dream, then practice a skill or study something in your dream, and then remember it when you wake up.

I'd definitely say practicing something in a lucid dream can help you become better. This is especially true of things that can be dangerous in real life. I remember reading about someone who couldn't do a certain skiing move and then they practiced in their dreams and they were able to do it in real life pretty well. Most of the things we do are a result of our mind making the decisions. Our bodies are already able to do the motion though because we have hand eye coordination. Having the mind be able to react better and tell the body what to do, and having the body already have the ability to do it mean that you will be able to perform the task better. As shown by that study, visualization and lucid dreaming can definitely help with things in real life.

yeah I've heard of athletes being hooked up to some...thing (I can't really remember the technical terms for everything) but anyway to make a long story short, they had the athletes visualize and mentally go through an entire race or something and the machines indicated that the muslces were sent the same signals as when they were in the real race just by imagining it. So obviously there's a stronger connection between your mind and your body than most would think.

p.s. I've never heard of anyone practicing screaming

gan_nair, you can definately practice a skill or study something in a lucid dream (anything is possible while you're lucid).

Depending on the intensity of your lucidity.. yes, you could even "play the guitar" like a pro but whether you would be playing it authentically (i.e., the correct method/fingering) if you don't know how in "wake" life is doubtful.

If your recall of the dream is good, then the feeling will definately stay with you after you wake up.

Well I didnt go into it with intentions on practicing screaming/growling, but when the dream started it wasnt really a lucid dream. I was facing the lady who did the DVD, and she was actually talking to me. I interrupted her though because I remember trying to figure out where I was. I asked if I was dreaming or something, she replied by saying yes you are dreaming. Thats when everything just took on a whole new life, I mean everything became clear, and it was like I was taking a personal lesson from her. To be honest though, had I have remembered about lucid dreams, I wouldve went off a explored or something. But all I could think of was how cool it was.

When i was trying to get over the fear of getting a backflip, i would always try it in lucid dreams.

While the fear of doing it was still there when doing it IRL, i used lucid dreaming to help me visualize and experience what a standing backtuck (or flip) felt like. I also looked at my progression of the flip in dreams and noticed key points that helped me make my backflip better. For example, i observed my best backflips in dreams were done by extending my body as much as possible and then tucking as tightly as possible; this extreme change in body position greatly increased the speed at which i spun. It wasn't a big surprise to me, but it definitely helped.

I probably wouldn't be doing backflips if it wasn't for my dreaming practice of them
Paprika: Don't you think dreams and the Internet are similar? They are both areas where the repressed conscious mind vents.

John Lennon: I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now? Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.

As stated above, yes, it is definately possible to practice anything in dreams.

Your motor skills and body/eye coordination are exactly the same in dreams as in real life. The only problem I see are the variables that can differ from the dream world to reality, like gravity. You can't be sure that what you experience in dreams are going to be the same in real life, so be careful with more physical practices.
