      Lucid Question

      Hi Folks,
I've been following your forum for a few months now, and am a seasoned user of other forums.
If I may pose a question to the experts on the topic.

I'm wondering if my experience is some form of lucidity. I have all different types of dreams, though I've never tried to keep track of any, and like most, some I remember, and most I forget.

When I experience one of those dreams where I'm in an unfavorable situation, say, something like in a car crash, or being held-up and about to be shot, I have, and have always had the ability to wake myself out of the dream just before the moment of something awful happening to me.

As example, if I was in a car that ran off the road, went airborne, just before the car crashed to the ground, I can hear myself say, "OK, this is just a dream, wake up." I awake immediately, just before the crash, and still have a full image of what was happening in the dream, and also am able to "see" myself waking myself up.

So, is this something normal, that everyone can, and does do? Or, is it something unique that I should be exploring further.

      TIA for any input.

      to DreamViews, KD#mo!

Many people have the ability to wake themselves from nightmares or bad situations in dreams, without actually becoming lucid; I know I did, long before I found out about lucid dreaming.

However, that is a good start--instead of waking yourself up, just start thinking about it and trying to remember that the next time that happens, you won't wake up--you will stay in the dream.

      Good luck!

kd2789mo, first let me welcome you to Dream Views. Now to your questions.

Is it normal that you can wake yourself from an unpleasant situation.. yes.

Is it something that everyone can do and does.. no.

I rarely have nightmares but when I do.. I've never woken myself up before it got too unpleasant.

I also know that there are members who use LDing to help them deal with nightmares.. either to help them wake up or to face their fears.

I don't think so, but then, I don't know that much about it yet. I've had times when recall has been much more vivid than others, but this a distinct occurrence, is always related to something bad about to happen to me when it happens, and it has happened often, I'd guess about 2-3 times a month.
I can't recall any dream that I was about to have something bad happen to me, that didn't end this way.

What made me ask about it is, just last night, I was in a dream that followed the usual obscurity that dreams do, and towards then end, I was faced with a person who was pointing a gun at me...he said, "give me everything you have, money and credit cards," I tossed him my wallet, and he was angry there wasn't much cash in it. Then I vividly remember feeling the cold metal end of his gun against my head....and thinking if I would feel anything if he pulled the trigger....then distinctly recall "saying" 'this is just a dream...wake up!' And, I awoke remember all of it.

Sorry for the graphic description, but that's exactly how it happens.

I always wake up before I die in a dream, but it isn't conscious. I usually suddenly find myself in bed and realize I was dreaming.
