      "Proving" lucid dreams

Once upon a time lived one of my retarded friends at school. And guess what? He told me that lucid dreams are not real and are a load of bullcrap. I told him to just LOOK at this website and see for himself and he "doesn't want to waste his time".

AAAAAAH! I'm so pissed off! And he's not your average friend either! I won't name names although I'd like to, but he's got his head so far up his own arse it's no wonder he can't see straight! He is the kind of person who'd boast about LDing if he could so I think he's actually telling the truth, he really doesn't think they exist. How can I "prove" to him that they're chuffing real, bearing in mind that in his world the thousands of people on this site are all bots who are put in place to feed the "Great Lucid Scam"!

Stephen LaBerge proved this in the 1970s. Test subjects were monitored with EEG and used an agreed upon signal (moving eyes back and forth) when they became lucid. The brainwaves recorded by the EEG provided verification that they were in fact asleep.

Sounds like it's not even worth trying to prove it to the guy if he's being such an ass about it... his loss anyway right?

Yeah I guess you're right. I just can't wait until the day he actually has one and drags his sorry ass back to me realising how divine they are!

Hehe, got to love it. Most of my friends just shake their heads when I explain LDing to them. And one of them said "Arent you too old for that kind of stuff?"

I wouldn't worry too much about your friend. You're probably right in saying that he'll eventually have one, but I doubt he'd tell you if he did, considering the aforementioned positioning of his head. Heh, anyway, as far as telling people about lucid dreaming goes, as much as I'd like to tell the world, I usually only tell people I know would be interested. I really long for the day when I meet someone who exhibits as much of a fascination by it as I, and that's partly the reason why I come to these forums.

A lot of my friends have found this hard to believe, I just show them a psychology textbook. (Most of them will have something on lucid dreaming)

Don't waste your time, dude. Something tells me he'd just deny it whatever you do to prove the existance of lucid dreaming. If he just believes it's all a scam, don't bother proving him wrong.

My mom calls me a nut when I tell her of one. I used to think LDing was common.

tell people about it when they're ready to handle it or you know they will understand it and or be interested in it. no need in telling someone who doesn't need to know.

Edit: as previously stated by Metaphyz1k (didn't read the whole thread, crap!)

I have a friend like that, don't tell them anything! they will just shove it in your face. anyway, just leave him alone. If he doesn't believe it then don't bother. thats what I would do.

Let's think about it. Are lucid dreams that uncommon? If so then proving them or making them better known is something that would part of us would like to do. Why?

Those people that have lucid dreams since childhood treat it like it's very natural - count me to this group of people. I don't have any reason for making them better known because from my point of view it's nothing special, but don't get me wrong the vivid ones are still very special because they are a lot more than common lucid dreams.

I guess that only those people who learned about them recently have their reasons to making them better known. But then again why? Will it make them feel better about themselves?

The problem is that you think it needs proving. As long as he sees that attitude in you, he'll keep the same attitude. The moment you take up a wise and patient attitude about it, saying things like, "It's a scientifically proven fact...don't believe it if you don't want to..." or "If you don't believe what your friends tell you, fine...", the moment you do that, he'll become curious.

In essence, you're being as childish as he is. Because you are taking up a position where you are dependent on his view of the matter. So either be patient and wise, thus utilising reverse psychology -- when you show clearly that you know about lucid dreaming and that it's not a matter of believing -- or be straight-forward and emotionally open -- when you bring up the matter of trust and understanding between friends.

it makes me mad when people dont believe the facts. There right in front of them! I tried telling people i knew about lucid dreaming once. Haha they gave me some funny looks. And my mom thought i was like going over to satan or something I guess its all in how you make it sound. Try explaining a WILD. If you go up and say i know how to wake initiate a lucid dream!!! then people will think you are a nutcase. If you simplify it and just say that you know how to fall asleep consciously then you wont be as frowned upon.
      Total lucid dreams=88
