      States of mind are caused by chemicals in the brain.

      If they can isolate the part of the brain that is active when you are conscious (i.e., lucid), in a futuristic world they could conceivably create a drug that initiates REM sleep while activating your consciousness.

      Hopefully, but people are so sad these days by that time any public interest might be lost. Growing virtual reality technology is our enemy here but luckily I could never see it being better than lucid dreaming. Funnily enough I've asked loads of people at my school and the thought of being able to do anything you want limited only by your imagination is not appealing to most people. Oh what a dull race we're becoming... chuffing robots.
