      Lucid Dreaming Unhealthy?

I am not a hardcore lucid dreamer, but it does occasionally happen, and I am always in complete control when it does.

However, I was kind of thinking...
I was watching a show on the human brain, and I learned some things. When your body needs rest it puts you into a state of unconscienceness so that your brain can 'recharge.' It uses this time basically to let your brain do work as your body rests.

So I was wondering, if you are lucid dreaming, are you still considered unconscience? If you aren't completely unconscience, then does that mean you don't receive the sleep that you need for your body to regain its energy?

SO does anyone know if it is unhealthy at all?

I know some of you will know reasons that contradict me, but it was just a thought that I am curious on.

Thats not true because your brain recharges during NON-REM sleep, and dreams only occur during REM sleep.

Therefore you are not bothering your brain while its recharging

      Welcome to Dreamviews!

The best argument against this is that there are natural lucid dreamers, who have most of their dreams lucid. And they're just fine, no mental problems or the like.

Okay well I wasn't trying to make a point I was just curious,
because sometimes when I wake up from a dream that isn't lucid, I always seem to be confused and it usually puts me in a bad mood for some weird reason, but thanks for the answers.

Lol nah it's completely safe, it's just another form of dreaming, that's all. Besides everyone on this forum would pretty much be crazy if lucid dreaming was harmful

Oh and welcome to the forum too!

First thing: the sleep cycle is that of around 1:30 hours, but yet we only dream in 10min of it. So, no, it does not startle sleep. What can startle your sleep is a WILD, because THEN you are staying conscious until the dream starts.

A scientific finding I'd like to point out, is that we only sleep still during the first 4 hours of sleep. After those, we start changing positions frequently, and may wake up by the tiniest things. Also, the length of REM sleep is bigger after these initial 4 hours, and REM is relatively quite higher a thought frequency than in slow deep sleep. Considering most LDs happen after these initial 4 hours, I doubt it can do bad for your sleep at all.

I'm pretty sure I'm conscious even when in a normal dream.

Wrong - we dream during both REM and Non-REM sleep.

Although aware that the brain is active during sleep scientists are not sure what exactly the brain is doing, although they acknowledge that dreaming is a large part of it. When the body is sleeping, the brain goes through different cycles. At different stages, the brain is active in different ways. In the first stages of sleeping, the body begins to relax, the heart rate slows, and people often feel as though they are falling or otherwise weightless. As the body slips into the second and third stages of the cycle, it is very apparent that the brain is not acting in the same way as when the body is awake, but nevertheless the activity is still there. This is where your body performs daily maintenance and healing, and where deep restful sleep occurs.

If the body does not go through enough REM cycles, it cannot fully heal itself, making the body act sluggish the next day. The memory is also affected. During sleep, the brain may recharge its energy stores and shift the day's information that has been stored in temporary memory to regions of the brain associated with long-term memory.

I understand what your'e saying, and no. It's not unhealthy. To the contrary, it can actually make you feel a lot better. At least that's true for me. After a lucid dream I am always in a euphoric mood. However I don't have lucid dreams more than once every few weeks. If you were to lucid dream every time you fell back asleep, yes I would say it is unhealthy, because lucid dreaming is a form of consciousness. You are aware of yourself, therefore conscious, and that can have a negative affect if done too frequently.

No, that is not true. Vivid dreams occur most often in REM sleep, but I dream all the time when I take a 10 minute nap in my office.

Edit= Haha. Adam beat me to it
