      Sleep paralysis??

I'm new to this forum, so hi

I sometimes encounter a weird issue when I sleep, that I think is most likely related to LDing... Ever since I was very little, I would wake up sometimes in the night, and I would be unable to move. I would be fully conscious, just paralyzed. Of course I would freak out, because I couldn't feel myself breathing, and I would just sort of hyperventilate until I could move securely, and then fall asleep again. I sort of forgot about it for a while, but relatively recently, I discovered this website, and I've been having sporadic DILDs and, very, very brief WILDs ever since. So when I have a WILD, I can sort of feel my body not being able to move, so I learned that paralysis is really just a natural part of sleep. I've been experiencing more of these paralysis episodes recently, but it still feels like I’m suffocating, so I just do the same thing I used to.

A couple days ago, I was taking a nap in World History class (bad, I know ) with my head on my arm on my desk. We were watching a movie, so the teacher didn't notice, but the movie was pretty loud, so I could still hear it while being mostly asleep. This actually happened a couple times: I woke up, fully conscious, but was paralyzed again. What’s weird is, my eyes were open, and I could blink, but that was it. The second time this happened, I tried to move my arm upwards (the one I wasn’t lying on). I didn’t actually move it, but I think my mind expected it to move, so I sort of saw this image of my arm moving, that quickly faded, even though, the arm didn’t actually move. I thought I might be able to take advantage of this situation, possibly have an OBE (it didn’t work, obviously, because I know nothing about OBEs). I tried to make my “spiritual” body move w/ out moving my physical body, if you know what I mean?? It didn’t work, like I said, but all of a sudden, the noises I heard from the movie started fluctuating in volume, and started sounding a bit static-y. Then, I just decided to give up and go back to sleep normally.

I was just wondering: Does anyone experience the paralysis thing too?? Does anyone have any ideas on how to harness it to my advantage, maybe enter a LD?? Is there any advice on not panicking and destroying the paralysis??

I know, this is really long and possibly confusing, but I would really appreciate some input. I can clarify some aspects, if you would like. Thanks!

Welcome to Dreamviews! It's a long post, but I think I understood most of it.

You are indeed experiencing sleep paralysis. Everyone experiences sleep paralysis, although they're usually not conscious during it. Sometimes it randomly happens that you are conscious during the paralysis, or you try a technique such as WILD which is based off getting from sleep paralysis into a dream consciously. So if you're trying to harness the ability to enter SP, WILD might be your best bet.

Now that you know that the paralysis is normal, you shouldn't panick. Just remind yourself that you're okay, that this happens every night, and that you can break it whenever you want to.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions, or a part of my post (or the whole thing, for that matter) doesn't make sense.

When I sit still for a while it seems that I lose control over limbs first, then if long enough, over my body. The other day I was watching tv, i have to say intoxicated a little but it felt so real I was puzzled by it, when my body didn't move when I kept telling it to but I could feel myself moving. My eyes were wide open clearly seeing that I wasn't moving. I tried to use this phenomena to my advantage incorporating the feeling into WILDs.

Thanks for the responses!!! Wavefunction, the thing is, I know that the paralysis is natural, but I still feel uncomfortable, like I'm suffocating. So I was wondering if there were any techniques to relax myself or calm down. And what about what happened when I tried to "move" without moving my physical body??

Tom187, that's really interesting. I wonder what people who aren't aware of LDs think if that happens to them.....

I've heard of the suffocating sensation, and while I've never experienced it first-hand, I can imagine it isn't pleasant. Howie wrote a tutorial about his relaxation technique, but you might not want to do something as long as that while you feel that you're suffocating. Really, you should just be able to remind yourself that you're fiine, that you're not going to suffocate, that you do this every night anyway. I know it's hard, but try to be rational - and don't panic.

As for your body "moving out", I would say that it's just a hallucination. These hallucinations are common in sleep paralysis, and the experience you described is a very common feeling - many people use it when WILDing to get into the dream (rolling out their dream body from their real one). If you believe in out of body experiences, it could have been one of those.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

I know what you are talking about with the paralysis. For myself, I tell myself to "wake the fuck up'" when the paralysis is too strong. As for how to cross over to LD, think that you are dreaming. close your eyes and open them, then look around you without moving your head. It's like swimming through tar, at first, but amazing

did you try to move after this volume thing happened? that could have meant you finally entered a dream.

Welcome to the forum! I haven't had SP that much however I have experienced it a few times plus had the suffocating experience you have spoken about. Although this experience is awkward and annoying it is completely harmless. You just feel that you are suffocating however you aren't really. Really you just need to shake it off and throw it to the back of your mind.

I experienced SP for the first time when I was younger too, and it freaked me out as well. The part that frightened me the most was that I would have very vivid hearing hallucinations, usually of crowds of people whispering, and I thought I was losing my mind haha. Oh was I relieved when I first heard about sleep paralysis and that it was normal!

I experienced the suffocation feeling too though, and still do, and it definitely used to cause some anxiety but I have gotten more comfortable with it. Like Wavefunction mentioned, I try to remind myself that this is normal, and that I am okay. Something else that helps me out though, that you might should try, is concentrating on my breathing as well. I just try to take deep, steady breaths and not get too excited, and it helps me to relax and stay calm. I know you said that you aren't able to feel yourself breathing during SP, so I'm not sure if this will work for you, but I believe it is worth a shot!
