My friends think LD's are stupid

All my friends think that Lucid Dreams are a boring idea becuse they think that seeing what you mind can make up on its own would be 10x better then making it yourself.
This is partly becuse I am really bad at explaning things.
Can anyone think of a way to explain it In a really deatailed way.

This is the way it is.

If I told my friends I'm attempting to become lucid, they'd say I'm weird and a "dumbfu*k".

I'd only tell people that I know wouldn't give me an answer like "Why the fu*k would you do such a worthless thing?". At least until I have had my first real lucid dream.

One of my friends is into the supernatural and OBE's, so he gets it...my other friends I have to explain to them.

If you're gonna explain it, here's how I did it:

"Lucid dreaming is just like normal dreaming, except that you know you're dreaming. It feels like real life, but you can control everything, like in the Matrix or something. It's very cool. Some people think you can retrieve things from your unconscious there, by talking to dream characters or reading books in a dream library. I'm doing it because it sounds like it would be a great experience to have."

I've had three DILDs in the last year, one tactile, two in the last three months that were dreamlike.

Some of my friends think is sounds sick to.
They don't just think it's cool to LD.
But don't care about, and don't tell them if they are going to say that it's sick.
It's like you got the knowledge about what to do, and they just don't listen. Why spend time trying to convince them that you're right.

Let's say you know how to make alcohol (just an example) and they want it so bad.
You try to explain it to them and they just go "yeah right, that won't work".
Then i'll just say, ok. don't try it then, i know that it's work....
same thing with the LD, don't try to convince them that it's fun if they just try to say that you're sick.

Tell them that the Lucid Dreams can be made up bye the mind to, but instead of going into a fight for example in a dream, you can fly around, meet a girl or stuff like that. perhaps that will make them find LD more fun. XD

Some people will just see those explanations as "cheesy", what I do in these cases is to tell them that you can do "whatever" you want in a lucid dream (or be more specific), and keep the explanations very short, if they are interested, they will respond with interest, if they don't, it would be better not to continue with the subject.

Ask them what kind of dreams they have. If they're better than the stuff I can consciously dream up, I'd be impressed.

Why not point out that you can control "reality" while in this state, and that you don't believe that they have never wanted to fly

OK, here is an angle. Tell your friend that when you are lucid, sometimes you often just go with the flow, examining exerything your subconcious throws at you with a critical and CONCIOUS mind.

The closest analogy is being able every night to take a vacation to a strange and far away land. It really IS just like reality, whater reality really is!

This is what I was going to say

Because it sounds to me like your friends don't understand how Lucid dreams work. Even when lucid you are seeing what your mind can make up on its own. It sounds like they're under the impression that nothing happens unless you make it happen, not true. In fact, things will often happen that you don't want to happen, or didn't think of at all. Maybe you could try explaining it to them this way?

Say its a normal dream and come across a monster. Then you run away because your scared of it.

Now say your in the same dream but your lucid. You see the exact same monster that your mind has conjured up by itself. But instead of running away, you decide to pull out a 10 foot sword from nowhere and fight it one on one. Then you decide to take a closer look at the sword you conjured and you find fascinating patterns and designs on it because your mind is still filling in the details, your simply guiding it.

Yeah thats pretty much the exact words I used to explane it to him in the first place. But you cant really win an argument with him anyways, becuse he always thinks he's right. Im just going to give up on him, its his loss anyways

Ask him what the difference between a dream and reality is. After all, do any of us really know?

My brother basically says the same thing. I stopped trying to convince him to do LDing because I know he wouldn't put in any of the effort, even though he's had them before and thinks they're pretty cool and enjoys them, he just doesn't like talking about them.

I would just stop trying to convince him, and wait for him to have one of his own, and then when he tries to tell you about it, shrug it off like he did you.

I don't talk about LDing (nor about Buddhism and metaphysical beliefs of mine which are not accepted by everyone) openly with most friends, there is not much point to it. I do talk about these subjects with people whom I trust and it's very rewarding.

To give you a suggestion, don't talk about LDs again with the people who do not accept it.
Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience.
It isn't more complicated that that.
It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is,
without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

the way i see it, if my friends say LD's are bullcrap, i say f*ck you then. and that's the end of it. i'm not gonna waste time tryind to teach some ignorant fool to LD. it's their loss. they don't wanna know. thats the way it is. i think most people find it hard to come to terms with the fact you can control your dreams because it sounds far-fetched. of course, it isnt, but that's the way they see it.
I need my sleep. I need about eight hours a day, and about ten at night.

You should explain that you don't really have to make it all up yourself in a lucid dream. Instead talk about it as a way of enhancing what's there. You can add stuff you wouldn't normally be able to add (you're dreaming you're on a beach, how about an attractive member of the opposite sex to go along with it), and interact in ways you might not have thought of doing if you didn't know it was a dream (Passing through walls, or flying, or jumping really high and come down like Neo making everything ripple, sure these things can happen on their own, but often one or more is prevented by the failure to realize you're dreaming).

Plus it can help a lot if you have any recurring nightmares. I know driving in a dream is always a scary thing for me. But thanks to LDing, I usually figure out its not real when the break doesn't work, the steering is inverted, and the highway has a huge gap in the middle of it.

I mentioned it and pretty much everyone was asking me how to do it. They were excited.

But most people other then them would give me a weird look and continue walking.
