That's just a natural human thing. Except it happened on a grand scale for you. If we are in a room, we could hear the computer buzzing, the person in the other room, the high pitched noises of the moniter, the sound of typing, breathing, etc. Our ears/brain can tune in on certain sounds. Imagine being at a baseball game and your friend is talking to you. He's 5 seats away. Despite all the noises, you can still hear him, even though he's no louder then everone else. Make sense?
Well, I suppose our ears block out repetitive sounds as we fall asleep, because they simply don't matter. The phone ringing interupted the repetition, causing you to hear it.
