      Is this normal?

      Background:

I'm sure I know the answer to this question, but I'd like to ask. I've been working on my dream journal and awareness for about 4-5 weeks now. I've had a few successful "episodes" now. I say episodes because I pretty much always have false awakenings and continue my Lucidity after a quick reality check. This can happen 2 - 3 times in a row before I actually awaken.

My method is basically falling asleep keeping the thought in my head "everything after this point is a dream"...I have to always have a decent 'shut-down' time before bed (i.e. laying in bed with my eyes open letting my mind wander for 20 minutes. I used to fill this time with TV watching, which if I do now I can kiss my LD attempt goodbye.) It's working decently well, when it happens, I usually do a reality check by plugging my nose. This always feels like the start of my dream but it could be the start of my memory of the dream, I'm not sure.

Anyhow my dream recall is far from expert, I usually remember 1 or 2 dreams a night or many fragments of what seems like one dream but I suspect its a collage of different dreams.

      Questions:

My problem is I've had about 4 full on LD's now, but I have some lingering questions.

1st - I've heard spinning can solidify the experience, but when I spin I fade to black so to speak and usually have a false awakening, or a real awakening. I remember one incident where I imageined my wife appearing behind me, spun around to look and faded out, then found myself in the same place, same dream with her standing there. This confuses me, looking at my hands seems to give me more control so I'll probably just stick to that, but can anyone identify with this?

2nd - After I've had a vivid lucid dream, even if it lasted really long. I wake up record it, then 2 or 3 days later I feel really doubtful that it even happened. I guess I figured my lucid memory would be as concrete as my wakening one, once I became lucid. But I remember it more like a dream (even if i wake up right after), can anyone identify with this? Is this normal, and to be expected or will it improve ?

Am I lucid or having some weird moment where I'm dreaming about being lucid, if that makes sense.

Thanks to anyone who reads and helps me out, happy dreaming!

This is common. Looking at one's hands is both a common reality check and a common way of increasing the clarity of the dream. I think that it has to do with paying attention to the visual detail.

This is normal. It will not improve. Lucid dreams are still dreams; their memories are just as fragile. Better record them in your dream journal if you hope to have permanent recollection of them.

If you met the following criteria:
      • You were dreaming
      • You were aware that you were dreaming
Then it was a lucid dream. Congratulations!

The only thing I would do differently is rub my hands together instead of just looking at them to prolong Lucidity. But yeah, everything DuB said is basically true, except to me, how you remember LDs varies from person to person. There are certain aspects of the dream that you will remember more than others. Taste, feel, smell, and the like.
