Here's an interesting one: pull the dreamguide out of your self. The dream should take a hint on the symbolism, y'know? Other than that, use your imagination. If you are more of an explorer than a summoner, then travel to some place that has significance to you. If you are a meanderer, then meander until the guide finds you. Tailor it to your dreaming habits for the most success, and have fun.

It comes down to expectation. Just yell for your dream guide to come. Maybe something like, "Dream Guide! I summon you!" or whatever you want. But make sure you expect him/her/it to show up. That sounds like it would work.
