How well known is lucid dreaming?

I first learnt about it last year and most the people I know have never heard of it, however reading that famous scientists such as Einstein used lucid dreaming as help in their studies and how tibetan monks also are aware of it begs the question,

Most of the people I know have never heard of it. But then again, most of the people I know think the network news is a good way to learn about international politics. *sigh*

I'd say that in the US, it's not very well known at all. Although that's kind of to be expected the way our culture is.

A majority of people I know have either never heard of Lucid dreaming, or know very little. Which is a shame really.

Most people don't know what "lucid dreaming" is, in my experience. But you'll find that if you walk up to people and say, "Omg have you ever had one of those dreams where you know you are dreaming in the dream?!?!" they'll respond either very positively or very negatively about an experience they have had. Most people think it is a freak occurrence though and don't realize how amazing LDing can be, and I think hence never got into it or looked up the actual phenomenon.

I had known about lucid dreaming for years before I came across the term. I just thought of it as perfectly normal, as I generally have them frequently and naturally. Most people, I think, have experienced lucid dreaming, thought they may not think of it as being particularly peculiar.

I only know of one other person who's even loosely familiar with the term.
I am of the belief that right now I am dreaming, and that you are all characters, therefore if you don't please me I'll just zap you to the cornfield like that little boy from the Twilight Zone. Or maybe I'm a Schitzo.

I did not discover the term "lucid dreaming" until I was about 25 years old. I had been lucid dreaming for YEARS since I was about 4 or 5 but I had no idea what it was exactly. I knew it couldn't be "normal" (meaning that it wasn't happening to the vast majority of peeps) because everyone I had ever spoken with who had similar experiences deemed it to be a rare occurrence. Since it was happening to me very frequently, I knew that it wasn't "normal" per say. I honestly never knew that there were books written on the subject, or that there were entire forums and communities out there devoting time to it, I just always thought it was a fluke - that I was an anomaly in the system.

So I would say that it isn't very well known (especially not in my area).

Thinking about it a common experience of lucid dreaming that most people have had is where one is in a nightmare and tries to make himself/herself wake up. This would be classed as a lucid dream as you need to be aware it is a dream to want to wake up.

In spite of that, from what I know barely anyone knows about lucid dreaming or has simply dismissed it thinking it was a silly idea.

i've only met one person in my life who knew about lucid dreaming, but she didn't even really know the term... she just called it dream control, which I guess is kind of the same thing, but she said that she had done it her entire life for as long as she could remember.

and you know the weird part? She didn't believe me that people tried to do it on purpose.
