      Hypnic Jerk?

For some reason, usually about 2-3 times a month, I'll be laying down like normal, trying to sleep, Usually sitting and watching my mind wander, not literally watch it, since I absolutely suck when it comes to HI. But I'll be laying there, thinking about random stuff, then I'll usually get this sudden feeling like I'm about to get hit by a car, or get punched, something like that. I then try to dodge and my whole body jumps, then I usually am fully awake after this. This isn't a dream thing, it seems to happen at that stage right before you lose conciousness and fall asleep. I don't know what this is, I figured it was a Hypnic Jerk, since the symptoms match, any ideas? Thanks for reading

That's exactly what it is. Good guess.

Yes, I love having hypnic jerks in school.

HAHA It's quite an experience, because it happens to everyone and it's even more fun to watch some one else have one. ROFL

Mine is always a falling feeling whether I fall of the edge of the earth or down some stairs, I always am in a VIVID dream by the time that happens. It always wakes me up though..

Thats what that is! I've always wondered what it was when I'd be in school falling asleep, and all of a sudden I'd just jerk for no reason

Thanks for the help! This happens to me all the time, but not in school, unlike you guys, I actually stay awake during school , actually I have fallen asleep one time in school, but usually I can't sleep in school.

Lol, I whenever I jerk it's because I thought I just slipped on ice. It's cool though, cause I just keep laying there and fall into a dream.

With me, it's always either my leg suddenly spasms (typically left thigh), or I'm half dreaming/half dozing and I suddenly realize that gravity is at a right angle to what it should be. The weirdest part is that I occasionally try to twist and lnd on my feet, which occasionaly throws me off the bed/couch/across the floor.

I've had hypnogogic jerks from time to time ever since I was a little kid. Sometimes with imagery and sometimes without. With a lot of the ones I experienced when I was younger, I'd imagine that I was running really fast, and suddenly trip over something really hard, and I'd jerk awake really fast, thinking I was about to fall down on my face, haha. In some other ones I'd think I was in a crowd of people and somebody would suddenly run up to grab or attack me.

Hypnic jerks help me sometimes when I try to WILD, when I try to WILD I sometimes nearly slip away into normal sleep. The hypnic jerks get me back.
