Was this a lucid dream?? A bit confused... help? :)

So to begin, let me say that I've never had a lucid dream before. I've been recalling my dreams since I was a little girl, and writing down my dreams in detail since I was 11 (I'm almost 27 now). The past few days, I've been doing reality checks every day, throughout the day, in hopes of someday FINALLY having a lucid dream. I've known what LDing is since I was 14, and have always wanted to experience one, but never have.

Well, I took a nap today around 3 pm, knowing that I didn't need to wake up any certain time, that I could just enjoy my sleep and try to have an LD. As I drifted off to sleep, I told myself that I would know I was dreaming. While asleep, I experienced some weird things in my dream, and also had a false awakening.

I remember dreaming that I woke up, got out of bed, and was standing over by my closet. I looked down at my hands, and they were weird looking-- I couldn't see any of the lines on my hands, and they looked kind of webbed, in a way. I remember thinking, "I must be dreaming!" I then went outside of my bedroom, and I was trying to summon David Duchovny, because I've been telling myself the first thing I'm going to do if I ever have a lucid dream is summon him, because I've had a major crush on him for 11 years, LOL.

Anyway, so I was trying to make David Duchovny appear, but I don't think he ever did, and I was frustrated. There was some other guy there, though, but I don't know who it was.

Then, in my dream, I woke up, and was telling someone (I think my mom) that I'd had a lucid dream.

So, I'm really seeking some opinions/feedback-- was this a lucid dream?!?? I'm so confused! You see, when I think back on it, I don't feel like I was truly lucid... I don't feel like I was able to control what I was doing, it all seems like just another dream to me. Does that make any sense?

Oh and also, I remember dreaming that I was experiencing sleep paralysis-- and I thought it was a dream, but maybe it was real? Then, I remember dreaming that I could tell when I entered the lucid state, too-- all of a sudden, I would hear this noise in my head, and then everything else would fade away, and I'd be in the lucid state.

It was all really weird, and again, confusing, because I've never had a lucid dream before so I don't know if this was one...

There is one common mis-conception that people think about when they think of a Lucid Dream. Many people assume that if you have a Lucid Dream, you automatically can control the dream and do what you want. But thats not true at all. Lucid Dreaming, and Dream Control, are 2 entirely separate things.

A Lucid Dream, by definition, is a "Conscious Dream" or a Dream where you are aware you are dreaming, nothing more. In your dream, you mentioned that you realized you were dreaming. That right there makes it a Lucid Dream. The fact that you couldn't make someone appear, doesn't take away from the fact its a Lucid Dream.

You'll find that it takes sometimes months of practice to fully control your dream, and even then, it can take longer.

So yes, your dream was lucid, despite the fact you weren't able to do what you wanted to. But don't let that discourage you. Most people lack any kind of control when they first start having Lucid Dreams.

You were lucid. Next time it happens, take a moment to just sit around and take in your dream environment, tell yourself out loud "I'm lucid, I am in a dream, I am in a lucid dream" just to keep that fact nice and fresh to make sure you have full lucidity. Stabilize the dream, and make sure you are totally lucid. Rushing ahead to do things always makes me wake up or causes me to lose lucidity. It will also help with dream control (a separate issue, as Kreature has said all you need to be lucid is to know you are dreaming), because the more confident and aware you are of the fact that everything is a dream, the easier it is to make the dream go your way and the easier it is to come up with ways to summon things and etc.

Thank you for the tips! I keep thinking back on it, and I guess maybe the reason I don't feel like I was 100% lucid is because I didn't feel in control at all... I feel like I was watching myself do what I was doing, as opposed to seeing through my own eyes... I don't know if that's "normal" for someone having a lucid dream for the first time, but it's how it felt.

That's very good to know! I'm extremely excited that I had one at all... I've been wanting to have one for about 12 years now! I'm really, really, REALLY thrilled.

hehe thanks!! Hopefully I have more, so I can practice attaining control and things like that... or even just to experience it more, because it's certainly exciting.

yea, the viewpoint can change by dream or even within a dream. If you do a search, there are a lot of topics on 3rd person perspective dreams and ideas on how to go from 3rd to 1st. I don't think the majority of people experience this frequently, but it's also not as rare as one might think. Remember to just stay calm, stabilize, make sure you are 100% lucid before moving on. I can say from experience... rushing off to try to do something before you wake up will often ruin a lucid dream. Don't ruin it, make the most of it and just stay calm and stabilize the dream and your lucidity

Yes it was. I've had 6 so far (check my signature), but I rushed to do what I want in all of them, and none of them lasted any more than 10 seconds.

I didn't know that dreaming in 3rd person wasn't common-- it actually tends to happen to me pretty often. It's often very confusing and makes the dream vague and cloudy, which can be frustrating.

I hope to have another lucid dream in the near future, and I'm going to try to remember to stay calm, stabilize, and make sure I'm fully lucid before doing ANYTHING else.

      *crosses fingers!*

I have 3rd person cameras when a graphic (and by that I mean has stunning effects, not blood or w/e) image comes up. It is completely in 1st person but at times when, like say a tornado hits, I commonly stay in 1st person, but other times a camera zooms in a perspective view behind me showing me looking at whatever it is I'm looking at. Afterwards it settles back to first person.

Edit: P.S. I WANT ANOTHER ONE TOO! 4 MONTHS SINCE I GOT ONE!
