      The Science of Sleep

It is amazing to see how little people understand that this movie is about lucid dreams. I've checked all the posts on IMDB on it and there isn't one concerning lucid dreams... People think Stéphane (main character) is just crazy, schizo lol !

I recommand this movie to anyone who wants to focus on becomming lucid because it is a very good way to submerge your subconsious in the topic.

Great movie. He is even better in The Motorcycle Diaries, where he plays the famous revolutionary Che Guevara.

I love this director though (same guy who made Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (an even better movie I think))

I've seen this movie way back last year on the net but the idea of lucid dreaming is not clear in this movie. I din't think he was concious in the dream until the scene where he explains what he sees in the dream to Stephane over the phone. Other than that it's a cute movie about dreaming and merging reality with dreams.

No I am sure he is aware he is dreaming. In fact, in the very first scene of the movie (which is a dream well under his control), he says "I have to be careful not to talk to loud, otherwise I might wake myself up."

There are many clues like this one throughout the movie and to me Stéphane is oubviously intended to be an experienced LD'er by the driector

Speaking of movies, for anyone who's seen it, is 'Vanilla Sky' worth seeing? Some say it's boring/uninteresting.

Vanilla sky is more reality based in terms of dreaming except the ending where David realises he's in a dream and becomes lucid and decides to wake up to live a real life. It's basically about his love life as a play boy and how it degenerates into dreaming.

Ohhh...wtf thanks for the warning I'll skip it.

Btw 'Jumper' is such a cool movie. 'Jumping' in a LD is one of my lucid goals.

Jumper? Never seen it but jumping into my monitor while a cartoon show was Youtubing was what I did in an LD. I ended up coming out from the top of the monitor .

In my opinion, The Science of Sleep is way better (and cooler ) than Vanilla Sky both in terms of treating the subject of lucid dreams and just as a movie.

I agree, Vanilla Sky got the whole lucidity thing wrong.

      *spoilers*
According to the story the main character was in a lucid dream from around the second half of the film until the end, but he only found out that he was in a 'lucid dream' at the end, which makes no sense.

The Science of Sleep is a great movie! Michel Gondry at his best.
Has anyone seen any of the films in the Ingmar Bergman collection eg. Persona?

Wasn't he actually in coma in a virtual reality after his accident?

Just happened to have watched the Science of Sleep this weekend.
      It was pretty funny.
Lucid dreamers will recognise a lot of the kooky things which occour.

Don't waste your time with Vanilla Sky. Pick up a copy of Abre Los Ojos, the original that Vanilla Sky was a remake of. Abre Los Ojos is amazing. It's about lucid dreaming in the way that The Matrix is about lucid dreaming... and it's brilliant.

Agreed, Abre Los Ojos is a good film, I haven't seen Vanilla Sky so cannot compare the two. But I'd back up the recommendation. Both films have Penelope Cruz of course.

I'm so not a Cruise fan or a fan of the douche they selected to play Pelayo. So I'm probably a little bit biased. It just seemed cheesier... they threw in "Lucid Dreaming" and they used it completely wrong. They left out a few of the elements that I felt really made the movie. It's almost identical, word for word but in English and with Tom Cruise instead of Eduardo Noriega... but the few parts where it's different I think make a difference. Blagh.

But honestly the original is just a great film. I have two copies in case something should happen to one of them! No matter how many times you watch it you catch something new. And I like the sort of rawer presentation than the "clean perfection" that Hollywood put into it.

I love this movie. I think i saw it about 5 times when i dvr'd it on HBO. love the use of stop animation, looks so surreal.
Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead...only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon. Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.

Nah, not really. Knowing how few can actually recall dreams. And even if they do, most don't care. Lucid dreamers present a very small part of the population and even if someone learns about lucid dreaming, chances are high that she or he will give up before having a first lucid dream at all... or rather never start a dream diary.

But thanks for the movie recommendation.

You know it's sad, the three people I've come across in RL who have found out I lucid dream and told me that they are very very interested... just can't seem to find it in them to keep a DJ I was so psyched until I found out they were lazy liars
