      Obsession

I currently classify myself as being obsessed with lucid dreaming. It occupies a vast amount of my thought space, and my efforts to become lucid are constant. At school, I have gotten five people who were previously unaware of lucid dreaming interested in it. Every spare thought is devoted to lucid dreaming, and some of my friends are getting annoyed at me because I talk about it too much. I have two questions:

      a) Is anyone else as obsessed as me?
      b) Is this obsession healthy in any way?

At first I would say so; now I go thru spurts of increasing/decreasing obsession.

Not if you want to have lucid dreams!

I've gotten people annoyed at me too, but I haven't noticed any ill mental or physical health effects. People think I'm a little strange maybe, but I can live with that.

yeah I go through phases of obsession....unfortunately I find I LD more in an off-phase than an on-phase lol.

      healthy?

depends whether its stopping you from doing something in real life that you would otherwise do. All it means for me is earlier bed and time spent journalling, plus a bit of RCing.

I find that obsession about lucid dreaming is the best way to have a lucid dream. If you not motivated enough, then non of the methods will work for you and there is no point in trying LD if you don't want to achieve the results. So i think obsession is a great, because it always gets you where you want to be.

      a) Yes, especially after I had my first lucid dream.. now my obsession is more tame.

      b) A little obsession is healthy as it will keep you focused on achieving your goals (whatever they may be).. but too much of anything can be bad for you if it colors everything else.

I'm sure a lot of people are as obsessed as you, the reason why this forum was ever created. I'm not too obsessed in it too myself currently, but I hope to get more enthuestic with it soon enough.
Well, being obsessed itself can't be any harmful by itself. If you take various drugs and pills just to get LDs or doing some specific things that could be less healthy for the enjoyment of it, it could get unhealthy. If you get unhealthy also, and become (hopefully not) depressed, you would have less will power to have more dreams...

It's only unhealthy because I won't stop talking to my (natural LDing) sister about it and she keeps threatening me. Apparently it's not as fun for her, but she just told me that her dreams are not detailed at all and she knows nothing about dream control, and no interest in learning... what a waste.

Quite honestly I think it's a safe and fun thing to be obsessed with, much better than drugs or something more dangerous. As long as your concept of reality remains steady, I don't think you can go wrong!

As long as your quality of life doesnt start to suffer I guess there is nothing wrong with your "obsession"

Your 'obsession' will almost certainly increase your chances of quality LDing, which can never be a bad thing.

i'd say your 'obsession is a good thing, because you will be more dedicated to reaching your lding goals. don't worry, i'm sure your friends still love you

I was what you would say 'obsessed' with it for a while at the beginning, but after no real LDs (the ones in my sig were for like 30 seconds and I didn't get to do anything), It's slowly faded to the back of my mind. Unfortunately, my lack of LDs is going to result in even less LDs due of my lack of motivation, sigh...

Yeah, to be honest, I suffer from the same thing as you. At first, when I started this thread, in February of last year, I was obsessed. Now, my motivation has gone down, my LD's have gone down, and they're less exciting than before.

      A) Yes. Who wouldn't be obsessed with a way to dream when you want, to know it's a dream, and be able to do what you want in it?
      B) To me, obsession is a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated. It'll be a way for you to focus.

I wouldn't say I'm obsessed but it's something I think about quite a bit and I love to do it.

When something interests me this much I put a lot of time and effort into it and expect to get results... this can lead to an obsession just because I am so bloody determind to do it lol.

I think you can become 'obsessed' with anything that you enjoy. And not everybody enjoys LDing. It's like when you have a friend who can somehow naturally play a musical instrument that you're striving to learn how to play but they don't seem to be interested in their talent.

Anyways. I get interested in a lot of things and they consume my time, my thoughts and especially my conversations with people.

      I'm fairly annoying. =)

Yeah, I'm pretty obsessed with LDing. It's hard to find other people who are interested in it, that's why I come here. I think that unless people discover it for themselves somehow they just think I'm talking gobble-de-gook and don't really stop and think about how it might be something worth pursuing themselves. They just politely nod and raise their eyebrows at appropriate moments during my rave.

I agree! You are not "obsessed"... you are simply "passionate"

I don't think it hurts to be passionate about something. Better than being a boring fart.

BTW, loving the new sig pic djb4ever!
