Wide open bro. Don't listen to whatever anyone else says. You keep your eyes wide open. I find it helps whilst watching for late-night axe murderers.
Surrender your flesh. We demand it.

Hi, stupid (this round of disrespect has been endorsed by Shift)

WILDing is keeping your eyes closed and tricking your body into falling asleep while keep your mind concious. Thing is, you can't think about it while you're doing it.

The purpose of a WILD is to keep your mind awake while your body falls asleep. Generally speaking, your eyes have to be closed for you to sleep. I'm sure it's possible that you keep your eyes open while sleeping and while attempting a WILD, but unless you always sleep with your eyes fully or partially open... I see this making a WILD infinitely more difficult than it already is.

This is how I personally WILD and I've had a fair amount of success.

Lie on your back and get yourself completely comfortable. Close your eyes. Now try and clear your mind of all busy chattering thoughts. Focus on your breathing, and keep it at a natural rhythm. As you breathe in count "one" in your head, then as you breathe out repeat the word "sleep" silently and peacefully in your head. Keep doing this counting consecutive numbers with the intention of going to sleep. You must discipline yourself not to think about anything. This can be tricky because we all like to think about things when we're lying in bed whether it be to replay something that happened the previous day, to mull over a problem or conflict, or to fantasize about our current crush. But if you want to have a LD you need to put all thoughts aside while you fall asleep. The following paragraph explains why.

As you lie there performing this kind of "mantra" what you are trying to do is "notice" any crazy, nonsensical, random thoughts that pop into your head. By having a clear mind you are more likely to notice the contrast when suddenly you are thinking a weird random thought. When you notice the thought (a sign you are making good progress) don't think too hard about it, just have the awareness of it being "weird" and try to keep your mind blank and just allow the thoughts to come and acknowledge them without getting caught up in them.

After a while doing this you should hopefully move into the next stage where you start to experience some HH (Hypnagogic Hallucination). Try not to get excited, just look at the imagery, or feel the vibrations or SP or whatever HH you are getting and let it happen. Be passive and just keep the vague notion at the back of your mind of "i'm dreaming". If you start seeing strange or vivid images just be aware of these images and don't analyze them at all. Don't even think "wow that's cool". Just remain nonchalant and emotionless. In other words, acknowledge what is going on but be disinterested and semi-dettached. Eventually you should find yourself being sucked into one of the images and a dreamscape will fully form around you. Or, you may have a FA at this point.

Do watch out for the FAs. They are very common when practising WILD and you will kick yourself if you are fooled by one. Do a RC every time you wake up to avoid missing a FA.

One more thing... HI is your friend, even if it is scary eg paralysis or severe vibrations. If you are experiencing HI then you are almost there. As soon as I experience HI I stay calm and just "go with it" and gently tell myself "I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming..."
