I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not. -Tyler Durden To summarize the above situation: A fictional character created in the head of someone just mentioned to that someone that they are the personification of everything they want to be. But what does this have to do with dreaming? People always ask what the use is of paying attention to your dreams and what the use is of controlling them. And every time they ask, there usually isn't a very good answer to provide. But, now I have a good answer to that question; a good use of dreams to improve one's self. The bottom line is this: we all have our own personnel Tyler Durden. They are our dream selves. They are good at all the things we wish we were good at, they do all the things we wish we could do, they fuck all the people we wish we could fuck. That person our shining glassy window into our own fucked up minds. The trick is in analyzing that inner person. We have trouble analysing ourself. That is a fact of life. So, as long as we think of our dream self as equating to us, we won't get anywhere. First, you give your dream self a name. I'll call it joe for reference. Pick a name that you would love to have. Make your joe look the way that you idolize and dress the way you would love to dress. Now, dream. This is the easier part of it. Keep your recall up and let your idea of what sort of person joe is form in your head. He'll develop personality and quirks that really resonate with you as well as having goals (many of which get accomplished in the dreamscape) that interest you. Now you have someone to see as a role model. The perfect depiction of how you think you should live your life, look at his strong points, his flaws and then work to improve yourself with the information you get. If you are going to participate, post here that you are and include the name that you are going to give your dream self as well as any other information about them that pops into your head. Comments/collolories are always welcome. This is only a basic idea, I purposefully didn't expand on it because doing so in the first post would be intrusive and would divert focus. But discuss refinements and added things to this base idea if you think them up, no matter how silly or small =D So, thus commences project Tyler Durden: dream driven self-improvement

New ideas are popping into my head =D Well, I don't know. If I had to name my dream self, that would absolutely be it. But on the other hand, my dream self is me, so I don't know if I need a different name than my real name. If it's me, it makes it possible for me to be me. I can't be another person, so giving it another name may make it seem unattainable, though something one could emulate. If I decide to, Shift is the way I will go as it represents a lot. It was a quip, but I am also very interested in this idea. I don't know that I'll participate right away... I've already had the epiphany I needed from my dreams, and my dream self is really just the way I can do all the impossible fun things I read in comic books and saw in movies. So a lot of it is not really applicable to reality or not what I want to emulate with my life, but an outlet of fun and comfort (you can't feel out of place in a world that is all your own). But, as I said I find this thread very interesting and as people reply and conversation gets started I'm going to keep an eye out and join in when I've made the decision to

Quick interjection. Why only one person, and why person? I am OrionStyles.... the hunter of styles. I change frequently enough in the waking world... in my dream worlds I have lived entire lifetimes as different things. Everyone should be like me... in the odd conicidental event that everyone and everything in the entire universe becomes me, the problem is easily resolved. My way is the only way and I am right. Solipsisim is the only true answer.

Personally I prefer other methods but who am I to judge?

Arby, you just broke the first rule of Fight Club. I like the idea, but I agree with Orionstyles on some level. The entire dream world is your Tyler Durden. Understand any aspect of it, and you will have a better understanding of yourself. I suppose your model simplifies it and makes it easier to relate to. Sum it up in one person who you can develop a relationship with. Find out what you really want from yourself and your life.

I'm taking a different take on it, by analyzing your decisions in a dream, it's almost like a metaphor for what decisions will sate you in real life. For those talking about escapism... what? You've gotten the point of this all wrong. This is the act of reflecting on what you thought/how you acted like in a dream and then translating that to real world situations. NOT escaping into a dream personality. The bottom line is to take the pride you take completing the actions in your dreams and reciprocate that into real life. THIS IS A METHOD OF INTROSPECTION (look up the definition)

I'm taking a different take on it, by analyzing your decisions in a dream, it's almost like a metaphor for what decisions will sate you in real life. For those talking about escapism... what? You mean, you want to rename and redefine yourself in your dreams, so you can be more free from your real-life downers? Give yourself a little distance from the walls you have built in the real world, so you can be who you truly want to be? That makes sense. I definitely do not act the same way, in dreams, as I do in real life.

Just my opinion Your brain cannot tell the difference between "reality" and a dream. Also, if your own happiness depends on what other people do, you're always gonna have a problem.

It is not escapism to want to find out more about yourself. It is just the opposite. Haven't you ever had lucid dreams where you thought you were in control, but something still surprised you? You have a level of thought going on in your brain that you are not consciously aware of. You have desires and goals that you are not consciously aware of. This seems like a way of confronting those goals, understanding them, and deciding whether you want to either accept or reject them.

All Im saying is I dont find the reason why you would have to be someone you "wish" you were in your LDs. I like LDing its fun to me, not a place where I try and be a completely different person. I like who I am thats all
