      Question LD in DNA

Hey everybody! This just occured to me. Do you think that LDing could in some period of time become embedded in the DNA or the memory of human beings?

memory of the human being: yes

DNA: i guess there is no straight answer to that. to what extent are thought processes determined by the DNA? I don't know. Well, atleast during an individual's lifetime, your DNA will not change much due to the fact that you have lucid dreams...

Do you mean of an individual human, or the species as a whole?

If you're referring to an individual, the answer is clearly No for DNA and Yes for memory. DNA is static and cannot change after conception except by various forms of mutation. As for memory, well, I would say that simply learning about lucid dreaming constitutes it being "embedded in memory."

If you're referring to the species, the answer is a bit gray. I would argue that there is already at least some sort of genetic component to having lucid dreams. As for the memory of a species, this seems to be referring to some sort of collective unconscious, which is an idea that I cannot personally accept.

I'll add an example a friend of mine told me to clarify...
I have a cat...We taught it to go to the bathroom to pee or take a crap, but whenever it does either one it kinda tries to bury it like street cats.
So my thought is could LDing become instinct for our species (like the burying for cats)? Surely I saw the potential of LDing after seeing this movie "Waking Life" and I haven't had a LD yet. Anyone who has had a LD as I'm sure will say it's great, awesome etc....and also it has many benefits, right?

I think it is possible that some people may have special genetic make up or hormones that allow them to LD easier than others. I began thinking about this before I even thought of lucid dreams by looking at my family. I have always had very vivid dreams and can always remember them ATLEAST one every night. My sister, brother and mom are the exact same way. However, I've talked to friends, including my boyfriend, and thier dreams seem to be rather boring, logical and they hardly ever remember thier dreams and claim that they don't dream every night. This got me thinking that maybe my mom had a specific "make-up" for it and passed it a long to myself, my sister and brother.

I know it's a little out there but I don't get why some people dream like me while others don't. Also, why do some people natuarally have lucids (I've had LDs since age 8) while others can't even grasp the concept??

Well that's just the thing, an 8 year old is not "aware" of lucid dreaming or even thinking too deeply about their dreams. But still, some tend to have and remember vivid dreams naturally

Technically, the ability to WILD could be genetic seeing as having SP as a disorder is supposed to be genetic.

I don't think there's too much of a genetic component, and that even if there is it's not really going to make too huge of a difference. It's probably more environmental, and able to be learned by anyone who puts in the effort.

Yeah I agree.... apparently my sister has had WILDS before I even explained them to her. She's entered a dream fully conscious lying still trying to sleep and she thought everyone had this!

The idea that LDing could become imbedded into DNA assumes there are genes which contribute the the phenomena of LDs. If this is the case, then the LD genes (there could be hundreds or thousands of them to produce the effect) are subject to genetic drift and natural selection so that they spread throughout the population and reach some equilibrium which may or may not conform to Hardy-Weinberg for obvious reasons. The LD itself may not affect DNA, but rather, the composition (mutations, polymorphisms, etc etc) of the DNA would more likely affect the LD. This all falls under the realm of molecular biology, and I must add that it is difficult to support a teleological argument without some biological knowledge.
