Thread: things you have never experienced irl

Is it possible to do something in a dream that you have never experienced in real life? Like lets say you are a virgin and dont know how sex feels. how can you dream about it? Or if you were born without legs, could you walk in your dreams if you never felt what walking is?

Ummm...I've never LD'd before so someone may come along and tear my answer apart lol...but people fly in dreams without having flown in real life. I've heard it's awesome.
If a person born without legs tried to walk, It would probably feel like what they assume it feels like, whatever that may be...

well i don't know but i know that blind people don't see in dreams they only hear

^ It depends whether they were born blind. If they were blinded in an accident, they can still see in dreams. Or so I've heard.

You would live out your assumptions and what you think would happen. The good thing about this being, you think that this is 100% correct until you actually experience it then you're like "oh, that was wrong"

Well you heard wrong those who were blinded in a accident loose their vision later in dreams as well

As long as you can imagine it, you can dream it. I am always amazed at how we can be surprised by our dream experiences. For example, I will eat a rock and comment, "That is not what I thought a rock would taste like." Why wouldn't my fantasy match my imagination? Do we have some deeper level of expectation going on that is out of our reach, even in dreams?

If you've ever seen or heard or even thought about something, your preconcieved notions will transfer to your dreams. If you wholeheartedly believe in something, chances are they aren't going to change in your dreams.

How do we perceive life? Through our five senses.
Smell, hearing, taste, touch, and sight.
Dreams are LIFE, with your memories, and your imagination filling in the blanks where the senses are missing.

An Example:
Close your eyes, can you remember what you were just looking at? Can you picture it in you head?
If your eyes are, in effect, closed forever, can you not still remember the sights you have seen?
A blind man can too.

Honestly, dream sex is so much better than the real thing.

I done lots of things in a dream that I haven't done in real life...thats when your imagination comes in

I am amused at how positive people are being towards this, while the community responded so negatively to being able to dream up a new color. I'd say new colors are possible, but if you don't think it is, you just doomed yourself to never being able to find out. Dreams work on expectations, right?

I think there is a difference between dreaming about a new color versus dreaming about something you've never experienced before. Some things are easy to imagine, such as flying or sex. You can use memories from similar situations to exrapolate what it might feel like. Remember the feeling of the wind on your face from a rollercoaster or a fast bike ride, for example.

Imagining a new color, seems impossible to imagine. You have no prior experience to draw on, and no mental framework to imagine what such a thing would look like. It is like imagining a new sense, or another dimension or reality.

I think dreaming up a new color would be very, very difficult, even for some of the smartest people, because it is rare for a person to have an original thought. While it may be new to them, it isn't new to/for someone else. Pure originality is hard to come by. Maybe it comes easier to certain people, like artists or scientists, but don't people typically base EVERYTHING on something that has already happened or was thought of? For instance, I began to wear my hair in spikes a few years ago. When I think back and how this style suits me, it is certainly far from original. I copied the "general" idea from someone on T.V. and adapted it to myself. While it was new to me, it wasn't new at all. I know this is a weak example, but I'm thinking on the spot. Work with me people!

I disagree here.

Take for example flight: while at first my flight in dreams was based on the feeling of swimming, one day I discovered how to really fly, as a new experience (it was hard to discover the first time, but after that it became easier and eventually like a sixth sense). It's impossible to explain, it's like trying to explain how you move your arms or how you breathe: you just feel it.

To see a new color you just have to experience something new, you don't have to actually control it. So I imagine it'd be easier than flying, having 4 arms, 360 vision, etc.

oh god not the "dreaming a new colour" debate. there was a thread on this not long ago, it was very long and in good depth, and i cant quite remember but i think we agreed that its impossible.

Nothing is impossible in dreams. I can't prove that dreaming a new color is possible, but you can't prove the opposite either.

Every colour possible has been already generated by a computer. Even ones that are not visible to the human eye.

There are no more colours.

If they are not visible to the human eye, then we can't see them. The computers only converted them to colors that are visible to us, but if we'd have super all-color-seeing eyes, I'm pretty sure they'd look different.

Take a color blind for example. Let's say he can only see the blue color (every color he sees is blue). He has no idea how green or red looks like, and even if he'd look at red on a computer, his eyes would still perceive it as blue.

Some people keep saying its impossible because the electromagnetic color spectrum or whatever says you can't, but... There IS NO LIGHT in dreams, its completely imagined, correct? Could it not have a new color in the spectrum? The point is that dreams aren't based on real life, they're based on imagination. I think the verdict in that other debate was that it was impossible, despite someone saying they had experienced it... I think it would probably be pretty hard to do though, or it might happen by chance.
