I don't think there is a way of telling. 4 1/2 hours - 6 hours aftering going to sleep is a good time to wake up.

Wait, which REM period? The one you wake up from to wake-back-to-bed? Sleep cycles last (on average) 90 minutes, so you'd wake up at a multiple of 90 minutes. It's a little different for everyone, so you'll have to experiment. The experiments become much easier and the results more reliable when you go to bed and wake up at the same time every night.

Also, if you wake up and you remember just being in a dream and taken right out of it, then you will have been takin out of the REM cycle. Of course if you dont remember a dream that doesnt mean you werent in the REM cycle, but its a good guess.
