What could be causing this sleep paralysis/obe?

I'm not really sure if this can be classified as SP, OBE or both.

When college breaks arrive, my dad comes to pick me up because I don't have a car yet due to my lack of funds. He drives 5 hours here, usually stays the night before and we leave the next morning somewhat early. Me being the smart college student I am, I go to bed generally around 2 AM when I'm supposed to be up by about 7 am. So when he starts the drive home, I am generally still tired and end up dozing off in the passenger seat.

Now I have done this trip back home with him about 15 times now (in my senior year). I would say about 80% of the time, I end up in sleep paralysis mode, unable to move for a while. On the most recent trip home this past weekend, not only did I suffer from SP, but at the same time, I was kind of OBE because I could see/hear myself snoring which I NEVER do. So I am watching and listening to myself snoring and can feel my dad's "Is he really snoring?" glare. I try to get myself moving, still not 100% sure if I'm actually dreaming this or not. The instant I regain control, I look over to my dad and ask if I was snoring to which he answers yes and asked how I knew.

I don't have the SP happen under any other circumstances than when I'm sitting in the car coming home from college after a short night's rest. But can lack of sleep cause sleep paralysis/obe's like this?
Wait!! .......Am I dreaming right now?

Sounds like what happens to me during the occasional WBTB:

Have you ever attempted a WBTB/WILD? If not, then this wouldn't seem abnormal to me. If you have however, I can't say I know why you only enter sleep paralysis in this situation. Perhaps it has something to do with sleep position? Or maybe being in the car keeps you more conscious than being in the bed.

In the past I have attempted them. And by 'past' I mean about 4 years ago.
