Sounds like what happens to me during the occasional WBTB:
I go to bed generally around 2 AM when I'm supposed to be up by about 7 am. So when he starts the drive home, I am generally still tired and end up dozing off in the passenger seat.
Have you ever attempted a WBTB/WILD? If not, then this wouldn't seem abnormal to me. If you have however, I can't say I know why you only enter sleep paralysis in this situation. Perhaps it has something to do with sleep position? Or maybe being in the car keeps you more conscious than being in the bed.
