      Your Soundtrack for Dreaming

Mystical Journey already began a topic similar to this about music, but I was wondering something else.......

      A. Does anyone constantly hear the same songs in your dreams?
      B. Are there any songs or bands that actually remind you of dreaming???

... I'm curious to see what genres people associate w/ their dreams.

      For me,

      A. Any songs that play in my dreams are either leaking in from IRL or from listening to them right before falling asleep being really catchy.

      B. Roads by Portishead
      Protection by Massive Attack
Teardrop by Massive Attack and Portishead
Tonight, Not Again by Jason Mraz
      Champagne by 311
Dreams are answers to questions we haven't yet figured out how to ask.

      Wake up.

I always go to sleep with music playing. Always different genres too. It usually dose not carry over into my dreams. The music i tend to hear in my dreams i have never usually heard before. It is a great experience for me listening to music i have never heard esp when it comes from the dream realm.

      Peace Sensi.

My Bloody Valentine's cd Loveless feels like a dream. It just seems so surreal. If you haven't checked this cd out, I would recommend it. It's very critically acclaimed, and one listen shows the reason for this.

That kind of music, massive attack, portishead, trip-hop i think its called sometimes, i listened to a lot for awhile to drown out noise from my roomates when i was trying to sleep. I never really listened to the lyrics, or focused to hard on the music itself, just had it at a low volume level as i fell asleep. I noticed though that my dreams started to become more vivid and my recall was better, but this was before i even started getting into lucid dreaming or dreaming all together, so the fact that i didn't anticipate any reaction to the music and noticed changes in dreaming patterns might say something about it. Just kind of has a mysterious, unusual sound that might put you in a good state for dreaming. I also like listening to sigur ros or some radiohead songs as i fall asleep, but that may be due to the fact that i associate them partially to the movie vanilla sky (related to lucid dreams). I defintly like the sigur ros songs best, the music is beautiful and relaxing, and the fact that the lyrics are in a foreign language allow you not to focus on words that might distract you from your intentions to dream if you're using a mantra or something.

      Hello, I'm new here!

Anyways, I generally go to sleep listening to the following, but they've never carried over yet.

-Sigur Ros, (someone already mentioned this, but they're worth a second thought).
-Mogwai. They are kind of a dreamy rock band, no lyrics. I even think they did some stuff with Sigur Ros if I'm not mistaken.
-Radiohead, (if you haven't at least heard of them, I don't know what to tell you!)

And some other stuff, mostly ambient / electronic, very frequently without vocals.
Opinions are like kittens, we're always giving them away.

Dose anyone wake up with songs they know playing in there head? This morning was classic. To my knowledge i have not heard this song in a very long time and its was playing in my head as soon as i woke. Made me think WTF..... Moonlight Shadow - Mike Oldfield. It sent me on a 80's revival trip...Ha ha.

      Peace Sensi.

      songs in my head

usually about 3 or 4 times a week i'll wake with a song in my head. i recall hearing it just before waking. it ranges from all types of familiar stuff and stuff i haven't heard in years. i dont really play music when im falling asleep (occasional instrumental sleep music), but the songs that i hear are clear. on one occasion i even recall singing a song that i didnt know i knew the words to.

Recently: "Le Fleur" - Minnie Riperton

Roads by Portishead is a classic!

I’ve had one experience while being in the lucid state in relation to music. It was REM

Listening to "This type of music" (whatever genre you would define it as) Radiohead, Sigur Ros (who I will check out) I agree it all helps with the pre-sleep stage, to rid yourself of anxieties and get you ready for the nights adventure.

      Radio Head huzzah!

I also have had some of my beast lucids with 'Covenant - Northern Light',
'Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works' and 'Future Sound of London - Dead Cities'
Also for anyone out there craving some unbelievable ambient, heres a link i dug up
for an online ambient radio station (attached at bottom...its long and messy) Someone
said something about music with no lyrics or lyrics in a foreign language which would
help you not to become to 'engaged' in the music. With this i agree entirely.

      Thanks FC

Two bands that remind me of dreaming with at least some of their songs are Moby and Modest Mouse. They're both mostly soft, easygoing music with a slightly unusual sound. Moby does what I think is called House music. Its electronic, but not techno. Usually a slow, steady beat with subdued sound. Modest mouse is a sort of easygoing rock with a sound that I'd just have to describe as dreamy.
Well life is short, so love the one ya' got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot.

YO, u know what it's like to dream about this really sweet melody, and by the time you wake up, you forgot exactly how it went? One of the most frustrating things I've dealt with, man.

I listen to music, all kinds, all day long, hearing music for at least 10 hours a day while working. Every time I fall asleep I have a song stuck in my head and usually it ends up playing fully in my mind, exactly the same as listening to it as I'm in a Hypnagogic state.

And I wake up every day singing some random song, Even if I wasn't dreaming about it or even heard it recently, the first thing that happens when I wake is hear some tune in my head. Yesterday was Rosalita by the Boss, don't know why...

I rarely wake up directly from a dream so I can't figure out where these songs are coming from.

If anyone has XM radio, falling asleep listening to Audio Visions channel 77 is great, all mellow very dreamy new age stuff, sometimes nature sounds too.

My favorite for self hypnosis and going to sleep is Sasha's CD, Airdrawndagger. It's really trippy, trancy type music. Very surreal sounds and cool background noises. It really makes me feel like I'm being led on a journey, but that's because I have given myself suggestions in self hypnosis to let the music lead me to the trance state. Really cool CD.

I always listen to music as I'm going to sleep to increase lucid rates.

      Usually,

      Radiohead- OK Computer
DJ Mystik- Unchained Melody (The only techno I can listen to while going to sleep)
Age of Mythology Soundtrack (Really cool, natural sounding music)
Space Hog (Only a few songs, most are too...peppy. They keep me awake...)

It's worked pretty well at inducing lucidity, because I always RC when listening to those groups.

      good crashing tunes

pink floyd's "dark side of the moon", "wish you were here", or "ummagumma" are my all time fave crash out tunes.
...hell just about anything before 1975 from pink floyd is good to crash to

roger waters' "the pros and cons of hitchhiking" is actually ABOUT a dream and good crash out music to boot.

tangerine dream has some great instrumental stuff. orchestral movie soundtracks are good for setting a tone because they're made to evoke specific emotional states.

anything instrumental is good. lyrics tend to focus your attention rather than letting it wander, which can be counterproductive.

things with large quick changes in dynamics (soft LOUD soft LOUD) don't seem to work as well as things which either remain subdued or change dynamics gradually.

some people swear by those "sounds of nature" type things. personally it's distracting to me. i prefer slow tempoed things with long instrumental passages and melodies which meander through changes. some others i've talked to swear by a low level background noise (refrigerator motor, river close by, comptuer fan) to help desensitize their ears and mask other noises.

it is proven that continuous exposure to various aural stimuli affects people psychologically, but the reactions to a stimulant vary widely with individuals.

i think music's good to set a relaxed mood, but i concentrate better in the morning without being awakened by it. i set a buzzer/beeper style clock to wake up when i'm going to intentionally try to recall my dreams; otherwise whatever's on the radio distracts me from my frame of thought before i'm even fully awake.
