I told my mom about Sleep Paralysis

She didn't believe any of it, even when I showed her Stephan LaBerge's book about Lucid Dreaming. She thought everyone who believes it is crazy.

Tell her about REM Atonia, you could say that Sleep Paralysis is a conscious REM Atonia

Without REM Atonia everyone at night would be sleepwalkers, or you would be talking while dreaming.

I never even thought about REM Atonia. Thanks!

      From Wikipedia:

The release of certain neurotransmitters, the monoamines (norepinephrine, serotonin and histamine), is completely shut down during REM.

This causes REM atonia, a state in which the motor neurons are not stimulated and thus the body's muscles do not move.

Lack of such REM atonia causes REM Behavior Disorder; sufferers act out the movements occurring in their dreams.
So actually REM Behavior Disorder is just sleepwalking, or moving while dreaming..

Hmm...reading about this I remember a dream when I was a kid, where I was swimming in a swimming pool, and the next day my brother told me that I was moving my arms like if I was swimming... 0.o..
Luckily it was the only time something like that happened...

My mother is the same, she refuses to believe in lucid dreaming period. I haven't told her it's scientifically proven. Just one of those things.

Ah, do what a man did, tell her to call a random scientist and ask his opinion on this, I still don't get why it works, but it does <.<

My mother takes interest to it, speaks about her own dreams sometimes too. But I've seen a fairly large amount of topics with mothers who fail to understand what lucid dreaming is, sometimes telling their son / daughter that they are "banned from lucid dreaming".

Good lord... Tell her she needs to do some research or maybe turn on the discovery channel every now and then. Maybe she will learn first hand.

Besides that sleepwalking occurs during stages 3-4 of sleep. I appreciate you brought this up though

Haha, I told my parents about lucid dreaming in general.
They just go along with what ever I say, however I know they don't believe it. I am intersted in getting the LaBerge book. Lucid dreaming is a great subject to research, and I may use it for incoming school reports.

      But we Know its real,

Lol, tell him to go to these forums and browse around for a few hour. I doubt he will have the same conclusion.

I told my cousin about lucid dreaming a few months ago and he said it sounded cool. I told him to read about it online, but he didn't want to. Just yesturday we ended up talking about it again and he doesn't believe any of it. He said that there's no proof that it works, but if he would just look it up, he would see that there's plenty of proof. And this is the part that really annoyed me. He said "You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet".

I've just gave up on trying to convince him. People like him remind me of the doubters of the flying machine. If they would just look at the proof, they would see that it works, but they won't because it sounds impossible.

Some parents are strict these days. If you tell them your into something then they think you need help. Ask a Therapist or Psychologist about Lucid Dreaming. And they'll tell her what Lucid Dreaming means. Tell your mom Lucid Dreaming is a sign of education. You are trying to learn how to control your dreams better. You are trying to learn what dreams are and what causes them. You are trying to conquer your nightmares. If shes one of those religious strict type that thinks Lucid Dreaming involves with Witchcraft. Tell her it has nothing to do with that. Lucid Dreaming isn't evil. I'm pretty sure your mom has had to have a Lucid Dream before in her life. The people who says they don't have *proof* of Lucid Dreaming. Ask a Scientist that studies Lucid Dreaming and Dreaming all together.

When I talked to my parents, my dad said he managed to re-enter a dream upon waking up becuase he concentrated. Upon further investigation, I found my dad had DEILD'd. I also found out a few friends have had SP before, and one other friend said controling his dreames would make him like sleep even more.
I'm going to have to tell him about LDing sometime...
But anyway, my parents are perfectly fine with my lucid dreaming. Lucky for me.
      I'm back!

My parents are ok with it. I tell them my dreams sometimes and they listen, they even tell me theirs sometimes too. The only thing annoying is my Mom's one of those people who believe dream symbols mean something like you're going to get a lot of money or something. And my aunts the same way which even furthers it as they have theme intersecting dreams! Mostly about getting a lot of money.

Why does it matter? They can't really stop you... It is all in your head after all... Well i guess they could stop you by burining your DJ... And they could wait until you are in REM and wake you up.

By this point, they should be seeking mental help.
