      Autogenic Training is the most effective way of self-hypnosis, which has been develoed by Dr. Schultz in the first half of the 20th century. It is a very effective way of self-induced ("auto-genic") states of very deep relaxation, which can be beneficial for body and mind. Quite to the contrary of hypnotically and self-hypnotically induced states of mind, you stay in total control during these extremely deep states of consciousness, which you can achieve with the help of Autogenic Training. These states of consciousness are deeper than can be achieved with most hypnotic and self-hypnotic methods as practiced presently. During this totally relaxed state of consciousness, which is extremely beneficial for body and mind, and in which you remain in total control, you can program yourself easily towards achieving a positive outlook and change of your general attitudes, towards success and harmony in life in general, and at the same time can use it to program yourself towards success in very specific situations. Since Autogenic Training was introduced by Dr. Schultz, this powerful method of self-help was taught throughout Europe, especially in Germany, where it originated. Using the traditional approach, anyone can master Autogenic Training within a few weeks.

      Theres another post somewhere on this forum (possibly by Puffin) that explains a simple but really effective relaxation technique.

      It is part of a MILD tutorial and is to be done before saying your mantra's. This is what I remember and works surprisingly well as the idea itself does not suggest it would be an effective method.

      1. Lie down in your bed with your eyes closed, as you try to think of nothing it is likely idea's or events in the day will enter your mind.

      2. Picture these thoughts in your brain as clouds and conjur an image of your brain and the clouds and let the clouds float very slowly out of your mind.

      I know what your thinking... It sounds really fairy like but I have always struggled to fall asleep and since doing this technique (started 1 week ago) I have fallen asleep before i've even been able to say my mantra's!!!

      Hopefully someone more experienced will see this and post a better explanation of this technique but those steps are all I do every night and I have been asleep before even reminding myself to try and MILD.

      @Kartogon "2.61 point relaxation"

      I 2nd this technique as well!!! There is a great description in Stephen LaBerge's "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" but i'm sure there are similar explanations available online as LaBerge does not claim this technique to be his own.

      I usually pick out sounds and concentrate on them; such as the central air or fan, computer fans, etc. I also imagine my body becoming heavier, one part at a time. I have a very active mind so it's difficult for me to relax at all. When I can relax, this process usually takes me to a meditative state with no hypnagogic imagery. I am neither awake or asleep.

      I've tried isochronic tones and binaural beats to induce relaxation and lucidity but my mind hates it, to the point of nausea. What gets me to relax best is the sound of water, in the form of rain, waves, or a brook. Unfortunately my mind also resists looping recordings. It's like an alarm to me, as soon as my mind detects a loop the effect reverses itself. Spikes in the overall sound wave ruin it too, even to a single drop of water. I have a very finicky mind.

      Haha that's so true.

      But visualization works best for me and I definitely will try out the autogenic training thing.
