Persona,
I think you'll find that lucid dreaming is an excellent way to refine your understanding of yourself. I was in a similar situation my first year of college (what with the creation of various "masks"), and interacting with dream characters made it easier to take all of them off long enough to get a good look at the "me" underneath. I found that characters closely related to each of the individual "masks" took on long-term, recurring roles in my dreams. At one point, I destroyed all of them and was left with nothing substantial to examine in my dream world except myself. I'm not sure that kind of rampant destruction is advisable... But anyway, I think you'll learn as much about yourself as you're willing to admit, and even if you learn very little, you'll enjoy the thrills of flight, magic, and creativity lucid dreams can provide.
It's hard to say how long it'll take you to start. You might have a bunch of lucid dreams tonight, or it might take a little practice. If you haven't started already, I recommend keeping a dream journal every morning and paying careful attention to the things which could have made you realize you were dreaming (e.g. floating pigs, scrambled letters on a street sign, etc). Getting to know the flow of your dreams is a fun part of learning more about yourself, too.
Feel free to contact me if you need help with anything.
