      hi fellow dreamers!

what inspired me to join this website and get into lucid dreaming was actually right after i watched the movie "Inception" for the first time ( i watched it a few days ago and yes, i was VERY late). the concept of the movie just blew my mind and it got me all hyped up about lucid dreaming. In my past, i had somewhat had lucid dreaming before. When i was younger (im 14 now), i had this stage where i would constantly have nightmares day after day. This continued for about a month or 2 and it was a struggle sleeping. but i remember that i had gotten so used to the nightmares, that i would know when the "scary moment" of the dream was going to happen (right before something pops out or kills me, etc), and i gained the ability to wake myself up at will. in the dream, i would picture certain images from reality (for ex: my dining table, idk why lol) and would just instantly wake up. But after my constant nightmares had gone away, i had no longer needed the ability, so it wore off. now, i want to learn how to lucid dream lika pro and experience the AWESOME feeling of being able to control my own dream! i know it wont be easy, but itd be great if anyone out there could help me out. thank you!

Welcome to DreamViews! I suggest browsing through the DreamViews Wiki, especially the tutorials section (there is also a link in my signature). This will give you a nice overview of all the different techniques and terms associated with lucid dreaming. I also strongly suggest starting a dream journal and reading up on RCs (reality checks). You should set up some reality checks for use in waking life. Fall asleep every night with confidence. Expect to become lucid every night and don't get discouraged. Learn from failures and always stay positive. Good luck to you and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!

      Welcome to DV!!!
Be aware that everything is about expectation concerning dreams. If you think that it won't be easy, it will tend to not be easy.
Try the Actor's Technique that you may find on the Yoshi's WILD Technique page. It will give you confidence and it will be easier to lucid dream.

haha thank you kingyoshi & reere, i also hope to become successful in lucid dreaming and i have a question...does the amount of sleep you have effect ur dreaming? cause i dont get much sleep and i usually sleep like 5-7 hours daily which is pretty bad. and shinice, the movie inception is GREAT! if you havent watched it, you should definitely watch it when you get the chance!

You will definitely still dream on 5-7 hours of sleep. The longer you sleep, the more dreams you will have to dream (obviously), but tons of sleep certainly isn't required. With all those lost hours of sleep, you will also get some pretty good REM rebound sleep. When this happens, you will hit your REM periods much earlier in the night. They will also be longer and more frequent during this time.

Exactly! The more you sleep, the longer your REM gets. At the beginning of the night, it can be 5-10 mins long. After 8 hours, you get 45 mins long REM.

Hello pbjlee429! I think everyone has pretty much said it.

I too loved Inception, but I'd already been at DV for a few years so it was just like seeing my favorite hobby [dreaming] used in a movie. xD

Something I do that works for me is that, before bed, I tell myself "I will remember my dreams." It's called autosugggestion. I've done this since the beginning and because I know from experience that I always do remember at least something, I have confidence when I say it and it gives me a boost.

You might try reading Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming if you haven't already. All the basics and backstory plus some useful techniques to improve your memory for reality checks and such.
Good luck and have fun! =)

kingyoshi - oh i see....cause im in highschool and i sleep at like 12 or 1 and wake up at 6 so i dont get much sleep so i always wondered if that affected my lucid dreaming....but what is REM sleep? and btw, i tried that "Actor's Technique" last night and i dont think it worked cause i only partially remember my dream but dont remember controlling it....but im gonna continue to try and see what happens. theres so much to know and learn on this website and its so hard to try and know everything :b but i will try my best!

reere - thank you! i will keep that in mind

Keitorin - yeah inception is awesome XD haha and yeah ill try the autosuggestion thing thanks!

      and heres a general question....

for the reality checks, is it okay if i use items AKA totems like in inception? haha like for example, a spinning top? lol

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. There are 5 stages of sleep and REM is the stage where most dreaming occurs. The actor's technique is like a booster. It will help increase your odds of LDing, but don't use only that. Continue to practice your other methods/techniques and use the actor's technique as a little extra juice each night. Try to really convince yourself and believe 100% in your mind that you will succeed. DOn't get discouraged if you fail, just stay confident. Learning everything will take some time. Don't try to rush anything. There are many many nights of opportunity ahead of you!

ooooooh okay now i get it. and aite i will try and look for more techniques. but the craziest thing happened last night! i went to sleep at about 1 and woke up at 11:30, and many things happened during that time....before i went to bed, i did that actor technique and went to sleep and i had some dream. i forget what it was now, but i woke up in the middle of the night (dont know what time) but i automatically tried to remember where i had just lefted off in my dream (which i did ) and i went back into dreaming! (into a different though, i think) but, sadly, i dont think i was lucid.....because i ended up gettin my head blown off by my friend haha, but the strange thing is, in my dream, i remembered having the dream before which i found pretty strange...it had to do with trying to infiltrate some factory, and i remember as i was going through some tunnel, i told myself i found this situation familiar and i remember that i had this same dream before in my past, and in that past dream i had the solution to how to infiltrate the factory ( it was some kinda mission to stop someone hahah) but as i was lookin for it, i couldnt find it....and then my cover was blown, and i was running and shooting, but for someone reason none of my bullets hit anyone, and my friend was one of the enemy people and tried to place a explosive on my head, and i was trying to run away/kill him, but i ended up dying. so i definitely know i wasnt lucid....somewhat.....and after that, i woke up again, but tried to get back into it but my mom woke me up lol, but after i could recall the dream! it wasnt all of it, but it was a good chunk, so i wrote it in my phone and now im writing this entry im glad that i could do a dream recall and now i hope i can keep it up! plus start reality checks and find some other techniques! haha im so pumped now and wanna have a lucid dream!

Nice! Remembering the dream while you were in it is a very good sign. You were pretty close to becoming lucid there. Just keep practicing and working toward building that dream recall. Good luck to you and if you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Oops must have forgotten about it. Yeah they definitely could work, but you have to be a bit careful with them. They will be more prone to failure than in the movie. If you were using the top for example, I have no doubt that it will spin forever in your dream if that is what you are expecting it to do. The problem is, if you are in a dream, but are leaning more toward the reality side (thinking it probably isn't a dream) then the top will likely fall over and you will miss a chance to become lucid. In actual dreams, these totems will, most of the time, perform as expected. If you expect it to fall,it will. If you expect it to spin forever, then it most likely will. If you do want to use a totem, I would always be sure to have a staple RC to use along with it. I would recommend the nose pinch RC. I actually have been meaning try out some totems in a lucid, but haven't got around to it yet.

No problem! I'll try to remember to give the top a try in my next lucid and I'll let you know how it went. If I can remember to try it that is .
