      Cool Success and Mirrors

After I stopped lucid dreaming for 6 months and decided to come back, I had my first real success, using the most feared reality check... MIRRORS! There are countless warnings all over the internet about looking into a mirror in your dreams, but I think that the only reason anyone ever sees a scary version of themselves is because they fear they will. I know I did at first, but after you get over the fear, your reflection is nothing to worry about and is effective at making you lucid.
If you have read Stephen La.Berge's book "Exploring the world of lucid dreaming", you would know what I mean. The bottom line is: Don't fear mirrors, because that fear is stopping you from lucid dreaming. Good luck !

Hi Ikkalebob. It's true. I used to be afraid to look in mirrors too because of all the horrible things people said would happen. Then one time I just decided to do it. I found a mirror while I was lucid and stared my reflection down. It did stuff that I suppose could be considered scary but I refused to be frightened. The reflection eventually calmed and I was left wondering why I'd been afraid of something as silly as a mirror. Now when I encounter a mirror I am anxious to see what my reflection looks like. It has evolved over the years. Mirrors, in my opinion, are one of the most fascinating elements in dreams. They never fail to amaze me.

I entirely agree with your last statement about fear. Fear is a lucid dreamer's enemy.

It most certainly is. Same goes for WILDs, SP and just about any other lucid dreaming experience that can be linked with fear. I used to panick about hypnagogia but when it happens you get annoyed at yourself for ever thinking it would be frightening, and when people say that it is it makes all the beginners believe it is, and when you believe things like that they come true.

I looked in a mirror once and I did freak out. It was me but an evil version of me making a weird face. This shocked me and I attempted to run but went in slow motion. I'll try it again for sure though

That evil stare was aimed at evolventity. He knows about mirrors. Trust me.

And I don't think it's because we've all been indoctrinated by reading about what to expect in a mirror. I've seen my reflection in mirrors long before anybody ever heard of Steven LaBerge, and before I personally had heard about lucid dreaming at all. I wasn't lucid at the time, but I have seen my own reflection in many non-lucid dreams and it's always freaky. Sometimes I have really long hair and look like Jesus, sometimes my face looks leperous or diseased, sometimes I look evil or monstrous or like somebody else. mirrors definitely carry some special meaning in dreams, or are a means for the subconscious mind to play weird tricks on us. Or should we all blame it on Lewis Carrol for implanting those ideas?

My default inclination is to think of this as a sexual reference. Though from your posts, and as smart as I think you are, I'm going to assume you've just mind fucked me...and I am now paranoid.

I looked again in a mirror last night in a lucid dream. To be fair my face was yellow and my eyes were bright green, but that wasn't scary. Not if I didn't want it to be.
I used to be scared of mirrors, and the result was several nightmares about weird growths and leporacy. In first ever lucid dream I looked into a mirror and I had 3 rows of teeth and a square head. Sure, it scared me but after that I realised that the mirror was the thing that got me lucid.
      Mirrors are our friends

Ok, the reason I responded the way I did to this... Evo, you've been around here long enough that I'm sure you've read about people looking in dream mirrors. So that + the goofy smile you posted made me think you were being facetious.

Panda, spend enough time thinking about looking in mirrors and you'll probably dream about it.. it's really interesting. Maybe watch Black Swan - I swear I've never seen so many mirror scenes in any twelve movies put together!!!

I don't see any reason to fear anything in dreams. Some pretty terrible things have happened to me in my dreams and when I was little it used to freak me out but since the age of about twelve my fear response has been completely dampened in dreams. Despite any other emotional response I always seem to remain calm. Perhaps this is the best indicator that I am dreaming as I find it hard to remain calm in waking life...

Hi, Ikkalebob. I'm new too and I will make some sort of introduction post in a bit. I read this topic and found it interesting. I have never thought of looking into a mirror in a dream. I am not sure if the idea is scary or interesting at this point but I will think about it.

Well thanks guys. Due to this thread I had a dream last night that my iris' in my eyes were missing when looking into the mirror. I assumed it was my prescription making me hallucinate.

I want to try and create a mirror maze in my dream. I think this will be a good way to confront any fear of mirrors.

In one of my first lucid dreams, I looked at a mirror and my reflection was pretty scary. But then I knew I was dreaming, so I just said "Screw you!!", then he went sad. When I woke up, I laughed my ass off.

I've pulled my reflection out of the mirror before and a couple of times it has pulled me in. The feel of the dream changes when this happens, it becomes hyper-real. Even to reach into the mirror to touch the reflection make the dream feel more solid. My reflection and I have never been on the best of terms. After it became aware of the fact that I was not afraid of it or anything it could do my reflection started physically changing. I think it is evolving, but evolving into what, I haven't the slightest. It's always a thrill to find a mirror when lucid and see how my reflection has changed.
