The idea of reality checking is to question whether you're really awake or if it's all just a dream. After you have made a habit of reality checking, it should carry in your dreams too and help you to get lucid.

Some good reality checks: Pinching your nose and trying to breath through it. If you manage to breath, you're dreaming. Looking at your hands. Usually they look blurry and weird in dreams. Looking at a clock a few times. In dream they usually show dramatically different times in each look.

Dream journal is the most important thing though. It really helps you to know your dreams better.
