Hey BobFM, welcome to DV. This is pretty much the best place you can find for lucid dreaming. People here are interesting on sharing and discuss, because since in the end, the way people reach lucid dreams is unique (everyone has their owns tricks), you can always find help or give help around
Don't worry too much about it. Lucid dreaming is a LONG way. It's something you perfect trough your life. You can for sure have lucid dreams within a week of practice, but don't be disappointed if it takes a bit longer to get one. Some people have them in the first night, others 2 months after. It depends on the person, but we're here to help you, so post any question you have: feeling you're practicing the "best way" is a great placebo (even thought there are no best ways ^^).
I'd suggest to first work on your dream recall. You will feel more and more excited because recalling your dreams gets your brain ready to act in them. Imagine it as watching loads of movies before you make your own. Besides, like you can see by many of us, you'll end up with loads of episodes where you are the heroe. That's just a great way to start
Meanwhile, try to read some guides in order to find your prefered technique. No need to rush, basics are far more important than a specific method. In the end, it's your will and regular exercise of thinking about lucid dreaming that will trigger your mind. Why can't that happen in 2 days? Because you're opening yourself to things you didn't know it were possible. Trust me, when you find yourself lucid for the first time, you'll understand how unreal it feels like. It actually takes a great distance from "knowing" that you're dreaming, and "understanding" that you are dreaming.
Movies also help. Matrix, and especially waking life, are great stories about dreaming (and being lucid) that can encourage you in your practice. Anything you can do to squeeze a bit more about the subject into your brain helps. Don't think your brain forgets your intentions just because you missed a day of recall. If you keep on this for too long, you will automatically wander trough thoughts like "Am I dreaming? Did I noted down my last dream?".
It's a long journey. One of the best of your life. Enjoy every day of it, and after a long time you will be able to look back and see what you achieved
