Exclamation New to this but looking for your help

      Hi there,

I cant say i have not had nightmares and the odd scary dream in the past but the other day there something happened that shocked me and leaves me rather worried of it repeating itself.

I was it my living room during the afternoon and i was having a nap while watching tv. I felt like i had woke up inside my body as it was asleep and could feel my body lying limp. All of a sudden i could feel like someone was grabbing me by my chest and pulling me out my body. I was scared at this point but was trying to relax as i knew this was a dream. it happened a few more times and i was terrified and tried to wake up. i decided i would open my eyes. when i did i was floating in the middle of the room face down over my coffee table where i had candles burning. I was about 5ft in the air. I was telling myself don`t be afraid and do not wake up as you will fall. I don`t really know what happened after that all i can explain is i was getting dragged about by the chest like pulled i could not see anything and then again i seen me getting pulled about above the table before i awake on the sofa in shear panic and fear that something was around me.

I pretty much got up got my keys and went a walk to try sort my head out.

Please someone tell me what you think.

      Regards

Hi and welcome to DV! What you're describing is called Sleep Paralysis and is completely safe. It can however be very frightening, because once you're in SP, you're basicly on the border of sleep. You start to hallucinate and can get all kinds of weird sensations, often threatening ones. What you did by relaxing is that you made yourself go to sleep and your fear started a nightmare.

If you ever get into SP again, you should do one of them following things. 1) Start breathing unnaturally. Either fast or slow, it'll make you wake up. Also try to move your body as you do this. 2) Relax and induce a lucid dream by imagining a scene or just let your mind do the cooking and you'll end up in one. This is a very easy way of ending up lucid in a dream, so don't be scared next time.

Hi, Thanks for the advice, i do recall feeling my body at one point as i said limp as i could not move at all. It really did freak me out and everyone i ask gives me a odd look. I obviously googled this and found all sorts from poltergeists to dreams. This is kinda the big thing thats happened. On the run up to this there has been a few small things from being in a dream where i see the room and myself asleep, then all my doors start swinging opening and it turns nasty making me awake rather confused but scared. That time happened my girlfriend had just come in so i just let it go but was always on my mind when i went to bed what if this happens again.

Only question i have - Is there anyway i can try stop everything going so bad?

Just have a positive view on everything that is dreaming, and you should be fine. Now that you know what it is and how you can use it, you won't be as frightened next time. Try to see it as an amazing adventure, something extraordinary going on, and ofcourse 100% safe.
