You sound a lot like me. When I was little I trained myself to wake up from a recurring nightmare that I had for a couple years. One time I decided to just face it and turned around at this person who was chasing and yelled, "What!? What do you want!?" Since then, they've been gone. I never thought much of it until I found out about lucid dreaming a couple years ago.

To get started I would suggest starting a dream journal, if you haven't already, to improve your recall. What good is a lucid dream if you can't remember it? Just remember that this does take quite a bit of time and determination and will take years to completely master. If you're anything like me than you will probably have a slightly easier time picking it up, but after 2 years I currently have 2-3 a week. Some people on here have several each night which is what most people strive for.
