Angry Noobie errors... it's just not happening?

So I had what I think was my first Lucid ever 4 nights ago. It was spontaneous and I only had control for a fraction of the dream. Since then I have tried to use the MILD and WILD techniques every night, and it's just not happening. When I go to bed, I tell myself I am going to have a lucid dream over in my head, like a mantra. When I get to a sleepy state - a state that would usually precede sleep by 5 - 20 minutes - I start to drift, and so try and bring my focus back on what I want my Lucid dreams to be. The thing is, this leaves me in a sort of limbo, and whilst my mind is clearly ready to sleep, I simply cannot do it, and in order to finally switch off I have to abandon any thoughts of lucid dreaming. If I tried to keep on thinking along Lucid lines, I just would never get to sleep. This has caused my to have regular dreams, with absolutely no Lucidity. Granted, the vividness and recall rate of my dreams has risen vastly the last few nights, but I'm not achieving the same wonderful results as a few nights ago. Does anyone have any tips for surpassing this limbo stage and carrying my Lucid thoughts and hopes to the dream world? Thank you everybody (anybody?) .

First of all, welcome! You're doing it wrong. WILD has to happen during a WBTB (when you've slept a few hours before waking up and then going back to sleep) or during a nap. Otherwise you'll just end up in "limbo" like you said. Also four nights is nothing compared to how much time some people spend trying to get lucid in the beginning. It's a thing that might take a long time learning, so either get used to the fact that it'll take hard work (otherwise everyone would be doing it right?) or you should find another hobby.

If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Is it possible to try too hard? I seem to lucid dream with absolutely no intention of doing so. It usually happens when I am already dreaming and I wake up and go right back to sleep. I consciously keep in mind what I was dreaming... then take it from there. I am a medical marijuana patient though, so that may help for me.
