Not sure if this will help, but there is a little-known technique for inducing (at least) hypnogogic imagery. While you are relaxing for sleep, rest a single arm out to your side, bent upward at the elbow, your forearm perpendicular to the bed. Keep your attention on your hand, and as you start to fall asleep, it will start to fall. Whenever it begins to do this, make sure to put your hand back up in the proper position. Sooner or later, you will be drifting off before your hand falls, and this state of falling asleep/focusing on your hand, you will begin to notice the hypnogogic imagery.
