      Hello Everyone

Hello everyone. A little about myself... I have never had a Lucid dream, but I have suffered from SP for years and that is what led me to this site.

It all started around 2001 or 2002 (or possibly before, I really don't remember). I would wake up after just starting to fall asleep, and wouldn't be able to move. I would hear noises, voices, and would try my hardest to move a muscle but to no avail. I never experienced the "demon" on my chest, but have felt the suffocating feeling and pressure. I could halfway open my eyes, but thats it. After a few minues of sheer terror and panic, I would awake and feel extremely groggy. Now, I didn't know that SP was a thing at the time so I just thought something was wrong with me. I didn't know that the noises were hallucinations, so I was pretty freaked out. Eventually in 2005, I finally started googling my problem and discovered that I wasn't alone. I bought a couple of books on it, and tried to learn how to control it - or should I say how to wake up from it.

Fast forward to now. I still get it at least once a week, sometimes daily, and every once and a while mutiple occurances per night. Even though I know exactly what it is as its happening and know that the voices aren't real and that its SP, it is still terrifying even after all these years. I don't know why, it just is. Luckily, I am able to recognize the feeling of it coming and I can often wake myself up right before it sets in (not sure how to describe the feeling, but I've learned to recognize it). Even if I fail to wake up before it sets in, I either focus on trying to move my fingers or toes which gives me a really strange unconfortable sensation and wakes me up, or try my hardest to make a noise and my wife shakes me awake when she hears my quiet moan (she usually has to shake me pretty hard to snap me out of it).

Again, I have never had a Lucid Dream but I would love to change my terrifying nightly routine to an enjoyable one. If I can figure out how to calm the panic I think I might be able to get somewhere. I'm going to start a dream journal tonight and start from square one.

Sorry for the long intro, but I just wanted to give some background info. Hopefully I will learn some good techniques on this site on how to make the transition!

I'm sorry to hear about the SP attacks but I'm glad you can wake yourself up before having them now.

Good luck starting your dream journal by the way, and from first hand experience, I can tell you that they really do help!

Good luck in your lucid dreaming journey, I wish you all the best.

      Welcome to DV!
Thanks for the long intro, I always love to read them for some reason.
That sleep paralysis problem sounds terrible! At least you're learning to stop it now though! Starting a dream journal is good. It will improve your recall greatly, and if you keep a DJ on DV too then we can help you look for dreamsigns!

      Welcome to Dreamviews!!!

I have a suggestion, one way you could use your SP for you is to try and have "Wake Induced Lucid Dreams", which comes from entering a dream and being instantly lucid by using SP. Also, a hint of advice try not to be afraid during SP and maybe imagine seeing happy things when you have SP it's all in your head nothing you see during SP can hurt you.
Dreams are a part of reality, sadly too many people ignore this fact.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I started that dream journal last night and posted it on here as well. I was really groggy when I woke up from the dream, and I decided to try the WILD technique that I read about on here when I went back to sleep. I relaxed myself, and kept repeating in my head that I will remain lucid, and every time my mind would start to wander I brought it back. Eventually, my body started feeling tingly like it was vibrating (never had that happen before, even during SP). It got me excited, and the feeling went away. I rolled over, got comfortable and tried again and felt it again. I tried to remain calm and let it happen. I started to hear noises like I do during SP, and I tried to picture myself in a dream (on a beach). My mind was racing and I was worried that I wasn't doing it right, and then I heard a loud freaky voice. It startled me awake... After that I just went back to sleep like normal.

I didn't have a lucid dream, but I think its not such a bad start for the first time trying! I had never felt that vibration feeling before, so I must have done something right. I just need to learn to remain calm through the noises.

I think my biggest challenge is going to be learning to recognize dream signs and do reality checks. The most stupid, illogical things always make perfect sense to me during a dream, so I don't know how I'm ever going to think to do a reality check mid-dream. Perhaps the dream journal will help...
