I can relate to the starting out only with DILD approach, since that's what I did the first time around. Although now that I am returning to the hobby, I realize that WILD is cool too, and that I can increase my chances of having a lucid dream by trying to achieve lucidity both as DILD and as WILD at different times. And as you say you now know, WILD is not scary, and actually has nothing to do with SP (that's a misconception the staff on here are trying to fight). I only had one WILD so far, and there was nothing scary about it, and the only difference to a DILD was that I knew I was dreaming as soon as I fell asleep and did not need to wait for clues to help me figure it out, which was helpful. DILD however is considered easier by many, though not all beginners.
Read about and try out different techniques gradually until you find one that works for you. Best!
Thanks for pointing out the tutorials in the wiki - hadn't seen them, found some interesting articles

But moving on, if you're a deep sleeper, and have naturally good dream recall, I would suggest DILD. If you're a light sleeper and can wake up without alarms, I would suggest WILD. Or you can go for both. Behind every failed WILD lies a chance for a DILD.
Thanks for clearing that up. Right now I want to focus on one technique so I'm trying my luck with DILD since I rarely get up in the middle of the night and in a few days of starting my dream journal, I've been able to recall not only lots of dreams I've had this week, but ones I had months ago and forgot about. If after, say a couple of months with no luck with DILD, I might go for WILD, but I'm pretty confident I can get this to work.
