      Hello :)

So about a year ago I saw something about LDing on facebook, and was keen to try it out. That is, until I stumbled across all these horror stories about SP. It scared me enough to not give Lucid Dreaming a second thought.

But the other day I ended up on the Lucid Dreaming subreddit, which brought me here where I spent hours reading all about LDing and was completely fascinated. So I set up a dream journal and read up on DILDing, and I really think I'll be able to achieve a LD before too long if I keep up my motivation (which is through the roof at the moment).

(And yes, I now know all that scary SP is nothing to worry about. Although I don't think i'll try WILD for a while )

      Welcome to DV!

Have you seen the tutorials in the Wiki yet? Wiki - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views I recommend reading those - in fact I had only recently started reading them myself I must admit, and realized my mistake in not having done so before. Good stuff.

I can relate to the starting out only with DILD approach, since that's what I did the first time around. Although now that I am returning to the hobby, I realize that WILD is cool too, and that I can increase my chances of having a lucid dream by trying to achieve lucidity both as DILD and as WILD at different times. And as you say you now know, WILD is not scary, and actually has nothing to do with SP (that's a misconception the staff on here are trying to fight). I only had one WILD so far, and there was nothing scary about it, and the only difference to a DILD was that I knew I was dreaming as soon as I fell asleep and did not need to wait for clues to help me figure it out, which was helpful. DILD however is considered easier by many, though not all beginners.

Read about and try out different techniques gradually until you find one that works for you. Best!

You you wont get SP while trying to wild unless you have a condition called isolated sleep paralysis, or other sleeping disorders. SP only hits normal people once or twice in their lifetimes. People with ISP get it randomly several times a month. I think the reason why so many people have tied SP to WILD is because people with ISP can have a WILD during one of their random SP episodes.

But moving on, if you're a deep sleeper, and have naturally good dream recall, I would suggest DILD. If you're a light sleeper and can wake up without alarms, I would suggest WILD. Or you can go for both. Behind every failed WILD lies a chance for a DILD.

Thanks for pointing out the tutorials in the wiki - hadn't seen them, found some interesting articles

Thanks for clearing that up. Right now I want to focus on one technique so I'm trying my luck with DILD since I rarely get up in the middle of the night and in a few days of starting my dream journal, I've been able to recall not only lots of dreams I've had this week, but ones I had months ago and forgot about. If after, say a couple of months with no luck with DILD, I might go for WILD, but I'm pretty confident I can get this to work.
