Sleep paralysis can be a pretty frightening thing if you don't know what it is. As a child I would often only experience sleep paralysis while I am still asleep. Due to my tendency to sleep face down it was also accompanied by a sensation of not being able to breathe, which is also quite frightening. The key to instantaneously breaking sleep paralysis is breathing. Sleep paralysis occurs so that you do not act out your dreams, because dreaming about something creates the exact same brain response as actually doing it. In order to break it you must communicate to your body that you are in fact awake, and there is no more need for the paralysis. Before I knew how to break it properly I was stuck struggling with all of my might (obviously I was actually moving) until one of my limbs spasmed and the paralysis was broken. Later I found the slightly more efficient way to break it. Even in total sleep paralysis your fingers and toes will still have a little mobility. If you continuously wiggle them then gradually your limbs will also be free from the paralysis, in which case you are free to spasm, which will break the paralysis. The most efficient and easy way to break it is using breathing. If you breathe in a very aggressive and irregular pattern your body will realize that you are awake. The reason for this is because a sleeping person's breathing is usually quite calm, slow and uniform. So breathing in any way different than that will tip your body off that it is time to release the paralysis.
